Readiness Code, Generating

Special tools and equipment





- VAG1788/10 RPM adjuster
- V.A.G1551 Scan Tool (or VAG1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG1551/3 cable

Test requirements
- Vehicle stationary
- For vehicles with automatic transmission, selector lever must be in -P- or -N-.
- Parking brake must be engaged or else daylight driving lights will be switched on.
- A/C system must be switched off.
- All electrical consumers, for example, lights and rear window defogger must be switched off.
- Coolant temperature must be between 88-95 C, See Display group 04, display field 3
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) less than 60 °C See Display group 04, display field 4

Procedure
- Connect V.A.G 1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Then switch ignition on and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01. (Connecting scan tool and selecting ECM) [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Work step 1: Check DTC Memory

Select function XX


- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory" function 02. Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Number of stored DTCs or "No DTC recognized" will be indicated on display.


X DTC recognized ->


If a DTC is stored:
- Repair malfunctions that were printed out using DTC table:
SAE P0-Codes P Code Charts
SAE P1-Codes P Code Charts

If no DTCs are stored:
- Press the -> -button and continue with work step 3.

Work step 2: Erase DTC Memory

- Press buttons -0- and -5- to select "Erase DTC Memory" function 05. Press -Q- button to confirm input.


NOTE: The readiness code is reset/erased every time DTC memory is erased.

DTC Memory is erased!



NOTE: If ignition was switched off between the steps "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory", DTC memory will not be erased.


- Press -> button.

Work step 3: Adapt throttle valve control module to Engine Control Module (ECM)

- Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04. Press - Q- button to confirm input.

- Press buttons -0-, -6- and -0- to select "Display group number 60". Press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Check specified values in display fields 3 and 4.







- Do not end adaptation by pressing the -> button. until it has been in progress for at least 30 seconds.

Work step: 4
- Start engine and let run at idle.


NOTE: Engine must not be shut off again during work sequence.

- Press button 1 to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.

Work step 5: Oxygen sensor aging diagnostic bank 1 and bank 2 before catalytic converter

- Use VAG1788/10 RPM adjuster to adjust engine speed to between 1500-2400 RPM and check specified values in display fields 1 and 2:
- Check specified values in display fields 1-4.

If diagnostic is initiated by the Engine Control Module (ECM), the indication in display field 4 will jump from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".







- Continue to maintain engine speed between 1500-2400 RPM until display field 4 indicates specified value "B1-S1 OK".
- Press button -3- (V.A.G1551) or button (VAG1552).

If indications do not resemble description:

Indicated on display (1-4 = display fields)

- Remove VAG1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Press -> button.
- Check DTC Memory.

If indications resemble description:
- Press button -3- (V.A.G1551) or [up arrow] button (VAG1552).

If indications do not resemble description:

Work step 6: Diagnostic of operational readiness of oxygen sensor behind catalytic converter
- Let engine run at idle.

Work step 9: Diagnostic of catalytic converter test bank 1 and bank 2

- Raise engine speed to between 1800-2400 RPM and hold it steady.


NOTE: This process can take a few minutes.


If indications resemble description:
- Continue to hold engine speed steady between 1800-2400 RPM.
- Press button -3- (V.A.G1551) or [up arrow] button (VAG1552).

Work step 10: Diagnostic of EVAP canister system (tank ventilation system)

- Continue to let engine run at idle until specified value "TEV OK" is indicated in display field 4.


NOTE:
- If indication in display field 4 jumps from "Test ON" to "Test OFF" and then to "Aborted", repeat "diagnostic".
- When diagnostic is repeated, it can last up to approx. 60 seconds before indication in display field 4 switches from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".







If indications resemble description:
- Press button -3- (V.A.G1551) or [up arrow] button (VAG1552).

If diagnostic is initiated by the Engine Control Module (ECM), the indication in display field 4 will jump from "Test OFF" to "Test ON" and the Leak Detection Pump (LDP) begins to pump. After positive pressure is obtained, the pump switches off and measurement starts.

- Press button -3- (V.A.G1551) or [up arrow] button (VAG1552).

Work step 11: Diagnostic of Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system

- Let engine run at idle.
