Output Diagnostic Test Mode (Scan Tool Function 03)

Output Diagnostic Test Mode, initiating

Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) activates the following components in the specified sequence:

1. Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-
2. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-
3. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-
4. Intake manifold change-over valve -N156-
5. Camshaft adjustment
6. Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-
7. Cylinder 1 fuel injector -N30-
8. Cylinder 4 fuel injector -N33-
9. Cylinder 3 fuel injector -N32-
10. Cylinder 6 fuel injector -N84-
11. Cylinder 2 fuel injector -N31-
12. Cylinder 5 fuel injector -N83-

Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G1551 Scan Tool (or VAG1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG1551/3 cable
- VAG1598/31 test box
- VAG1594 connector test kit
- VAG1526 multimeter or VAG1715 multimeter
- VAG1527 voltage test lamp
- Wiring diagram

Test condition






- Fuses no. 10, 28, 29, 32, 34 and 43 must be OK.

NOTE:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode is only possible with engine idle and ignition switched on.
Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted if engine is started or an RPM signal is recognized.
In output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), individual actuators are activated until the next actuator is selected by pressing the -> button.
Actuators are checked either acoustically or by touch.
To repeat output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) without letting the engine run briefly beforehand, switch ignition off for approx. 2 seconds.
The electric Fuel Pump (FP) runs during all of output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is terminated after 10 minutes.

Procedure
- Connect V.A.G 1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Switch ignition on and select Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01. (connecting scan tool and selecting ECM) [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

- Operate scan tool according to indications on display:
- Press buttons -0- and -3- to select "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" function 03.

- Confirm input using -Q- button.

NOTE: Fuel Pump (FP) must run and the flowing noise must be clearly audible at the fuel pressure regulator. If Fuel Pump (FP) does not run, check activation:

Activating Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-:

Indicated on display

Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve must click until next actuator is activated by pressing the -> button.

If valve does not click:






- Disconnect connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- and connect VAG1527 voltage test lamp to disconnected connector using VAG1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.

LED blinks:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Switch ignition off.
- Replace solenoid valve.

LED does not blink:
- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 64+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

- Also check wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal 2 and the Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

Activating secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-:

- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary Air Inject. Solenoid Valve-N112


Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve must click until next actuator is activated by pressing the -> - button.

If valve does not click:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Continue test.

Activating secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-:
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay-J299


The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay activates the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- and this runs in intervals until the next actuator is activated by pressing the -> button.

If the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run in intervals:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Continue test.

Activating intake manifold change-over valve -N156-:

- Press -> button.

Intake Manifold Changeover Valve-N156


Intake manifold change-over valve must click until next actuator is activated by pressing the -> - button.

NOTE: If there is insufficient vacuum pressure, the intake manifold change-over valve -N156- activates the actuator for intake manifold change-over. Check intake manifold change-over. Testing and Inspection

If valve does not click:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Continue test.

Activating valves 1 and 2 for camshaft adjustment -N205-/-N208-:
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Camshaft Adjustment 1


Valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205- and Valve -2- for camshaft adjustment -N208- must click until output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is ended by pressing the -> button.

If one or both valves do not click:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Continue test.

Activating Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-:

- Press -> button.

Leak diag. pump Tank breathing system


Leak Detection Pump (LDP) must click until output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is ended by pressing the -> button.

If Leak Detection Pump (LDP) does not click:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Switch ignition off.
- Removing rear right wheelhousing liner:
- Reinitiate output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).






- Remove 3-pin connector for the Leak Detection Pump (LDP) (arrow).






- Connect VAG1527 voltage test lamp between terminals 2+3 of disconnected connector using wires from VAG1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink (light/darker).

LED blinks:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Switch ignition off.
- Replacing Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-:

LED does not blink:
- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.






- Check wiring between test box and 3-pin connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 1+socket 80
Terminal 2+socket 25
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

- Also check wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
Specification: Infinity Ohms






- Check wire between 3-pin connector terminal 3 and the Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

Terminal 2 + socket 25

- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector -N30


- Press -> button again to activate fuel injector five times.

To activate fuel injectors for cylinders 2-6, proceed in the same manner as for the activation of fuel injector 1.

It is not possible to skip individual tests, but it is possible to abort output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) by pressing the -C- button.

If one or more valves do not click:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted


- Switch ignition off.
- Check current fuel injector. Testing and Inspection

Indicated on display

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX


- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06. Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.

NOTE: Ignition must be switched off after ending output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM). If ignition is not switched off before starting engine again, the engine will not start because fuel injectors and ignition coil will not be activated.

To continue test if Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve does not click:






- Disconnect connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- and connect the VAG1527 voltage test lamp to disconnected connector using VAG1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.

LED blinks:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR)

LED does not blink:
- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.

- Check wire between test box socket 44+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

- Also check wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
Specification: Infinity Ohms

- Check wire between 1-pin connector terminal 2 and relay carrier for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

To continue test if Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor does not run in intervals:

- Remove front noise insulation:






- Disconnect 2-pin connector -1- from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -2- and connect VAG1527 voltage test lamp to disconnected connector using VAG1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.

LED blinks:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor:

LED does not blink:
- Switch ignition off.






- Check fuse -2- for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- -1-.

If no malfunction can be found at fuse:






- Remove Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay (arrow) from relay carrier in protective housing for control modules.

NOTE:
- Remove battery Ground (GND) strap if tools are necessary for removal of relays or control modules from the relay carrier.
- Obtain radio code for radios with anti-theft coding before disconnecting battery.

- Check voltage supply (terminal 30) for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- according to wiring diagram, replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- if necessary.

If LED does not blink and Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay does not click:
- Finish output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.






- Check wire between test box socket 46 and terminal 6 on relay carrier (arrow) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

To continue test if intake manifold changeover valve does not click:






- Disconnect connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- and connect the VAG1527 voltage test lamp to disconnected connector using VAG1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.

LED blinks:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Switch ignition off.






- Check resistance between terminals 1+2 of change-over valve
Specification: 25-35 ohms

If specified value is not obtained:
- Replace valve for intake manifold change-over.

LED does not blink:
- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 104+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

- Also check the wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
Specification: Infinity Ohms

- Check wire between 1-pin connector terminal 2 and relay carrier for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

To continue test if valve 1 or valve 2 for camshaft adjustment does not click:






- Disconnect connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- that did not click and connect VAG1527 voltage test lamp to disconnected connector using VAG1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.

LED blinks:

- Press -C- button to end output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is aborted

- Switch ignition off.
- Replace relevant solenoid valve.

LED does not blink:
- Switch ignition off.
- Disconnect connector from the solenoid valve that did not click.






- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 115+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

- Also check wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
Specification: Infinity Ohms

- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal 2 and relay carrier for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in the wire and the LED does not blink for either of the valves:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
- Check DTC memory, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, See Erasing and checking DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory was erased or Engine Control Module (ECM) was disconnected from continuous B+ supply, readiness code must be re-generated. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
