Rear Suspension
Upper control arm, removing and installing
Removing
- Remove wheel.
- Remove hex bolts for control arm to subframe.
- Remove hex bolt -2- and take out control arm -1-.
Installing
Install in reverse order
- Install wheel and tighten.
Tightening torques:
Control arm to subframe - 95 Nm
Control arm to steel wheel bearing housing - 70 Nm + 90°
Control arm to aluminum wheel bearing housing - 70 Nm + 90°
Front and rear bonded rubber mountings for upper control arm, replacing

Pulling out bonded rubber mounting
The bonded rubber mountings for upper control arm on the rear axle were modified. The kidney shaped recess in the rubber segment was discontinued.
Only new bonded rubber mountings -without a kidney shaped recess- are supplied as spare part.
Bonded rubber mountings must be replaced as a pair on both sides on vehicles up to and including vehicle identification No. 3B WE 102 715.
A mixed installation is not permissible!

Lower control arm, removing and installing
Removing
- Remove wheel.
- Unbolt vehicle speed sensor wiring -2-.
1. Securing pins
3. Securing point on axle beam
- Remove hex bolt -E-.
A - Hex bolt
B - Parking brake cable
C - Retainer for parking brake cable
D - Control arm
Vehicles with automatic headlight range control
- Remove nut -arrow A- from coupling rod -1- for vehicle attitude sensor -2- while counterholding on wrench surfaces -arrow B-.
- Pull coupling rod -1- in direction of arrow out of vehicle attitude sensor -2-.
3. Upper control arm
Continued for all vehicles
- Press locking lugs -A- together in direction of arrow and slide parking brake cable -2- out from control arm -1-.
Note: Do not pull on parking brake cable, otherwise the parking brake adjustment will be changed!
- Unbolt shock absorber bolt -3- to control arm -1 -.

A - Retaining clip for parking brake cable
- Remove bolt -A- for track rod.
- Mark installation position of eccentric washer for bolt -B-.
- Remove bolt -B-.
Installing
Install in reverse order
- Install wheel and tighten.
After installing check position of steering wheel during a test drive.
If steering wheel is not in straight ahead position, perform wheel alignment checks!
Note: After installing check parking brake cable adjustment and adjust if necessary!
Tightening torques:
Control arm to subframe - 70 Nm + 90°
Control arm to steel wheel bearing housing - 95 Nm
Control arm to aluminum wheel bearing housing - 95 Nm
Shock absorber to control arm - 70 Nm

Notes:
^ It is not permitted to carry out welding and straightening operations on load bearing suspension components or those components, which locate the wheels.
^ Always replace self-locking nuts.
^ Always replace corroded nuts/bolts.

^ Pressing out is extremely difficult or in some cases impossible!
^ If bonded rubber mounting is faulty replace complete control arm.
