Instrument cluster On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
NOTE:
Different versions of the instrument cluster are installed, depending on vehicle equipment:
- Lowline version with tachometer and digital clock or
- Midline version with tachometer and multifunction indicator or
- Highline version with tachometer, multifunction indicator and display unit for navigation
Notes for replacing instrument cluster
- Do not disassemble instrument cluster.
- If necessary, instrument cluster should be replaced through the exchange loop.
- Fill out a damage report form and return together with faulty instrument cluster.
- Faulty units must always be returned in original packaging.
Instrument cluster must be coded when instrument cluster is replaced. Testing and Inspection
When the instrument cluster is replaced, the immobilizer must be adapted to the Engine Control Module (ECM).
As of model year 2000, there are instrument clusters for vehicles with flexible service intervals and instrument clusters for vehicles with fixed (static) service intervals, note part number!
NOTE: Additional information on vehicle specific maintenance intervals
- The odometer and the Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) on the replacement instrument cluster can be adapted using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST).
When instrument cluster is replaced, vehicles with
- BETA radio system 05.98:
- GAMMA radio system 05.98:
- Radio navigation system the radio's electronic anti-theft system must be re-activated.
The convenience anti-theft system is not effective until after activation of the electronic anti-theft system.
Notes regarding function of convenience anti-theft system
In vehicles from 05.99, the instrument cluster is connected to the powertrain CAN-bus.
The databus is also referred to as the CAN databus.
Data can be transmitted between the powertrain CAN-bus and the diagnostic wire (K wire) via the CAN-bus On Board Diagnostic (OBD) interface -J533-.
The CAN-bus On Board Diagnostic (OBD) interface -J533- must be coded according to vehicle equipment when instrument cluster is replaced.
The CAN-bus On Board Diagnostic (OBD) interface -J533- in the instrument cluster has its own diagnostic address.
The instrument cluster is controlled by a microprocessor and has extensive On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities.
NOTE: The instrument cluster counts a driving cycle when the ignition is switched on for longer than 5 minutes and a speed of at least 30 km/h has been exceeded.
