Driver Side Airbag Unit, Removing And Installing

Vehicles with four-spoke steering wheel

Assembly overview







1 - Steering wheel
2 - Connector
3 - Catches
- are disengaged from the back side of the steering wheel

4 - Airbag unit
- Because of the differing engaging mechanisms, only steering wheels and airbag units from same supplier can be installed.
- For vehicles equipped with wooden steering wheel, airbag unit is bolted to steering wheel.

5 - Hex bolt
- 75 Nm
- Discontinued shortly after start of production

After current supplies are exhausted, only socket head bolts - are available as a replacement part

6 - Socket head bolt
- 60 Nm
- coated with locking compound
- may be used up to five times

Press in a punch indentation after each installation

7 - Securing plate
8 - Return spring with slip ring
9 - Trim
10 - Clip

Removing

CAUTION: Observe safety precautions for working on airbags.

- Disconnect vehicle battery.







- Disengage steering column adjustment.
- Turn steering wheel - until the steering wheel spoke is in a vertical position. Pull out steering column entirely and push into lower position.
- Secure steering column adjustment.
- Insert a screwdriver of approx. 175 mm length into bore of steering wheel pan from rear (insert screwdriver approx. 45 mm).







- Press screwdriver in direction of arrow. In this case, clamp - will be pressed back and the catch - of the airbag unit will thereby disengage.
- Turn steering wheel back 180 ° and disengage the second catch on the opposite side.
- Turn steering wheel - to center position (wheels in straight-ahead position).

CAUTION: Electrostatic charges may result in involuntary deployment of the airbag. Therefore, the mechanic must be electrostatically discharged before disconnecting ignition- and Ground (GND) wires. This is done e.g. by briefly grasping the chassis or door striker.

- Disconnect harness connector from airbag unit.

Installing
- Connect wiring harness of drivers side airbag.
- Push airbag unit into steering wheel.
- Check whether airbag unit is engaged in steering wheel completely.
- Switch ignition on.

CAUTION: Make sure no one is in the vehicle.

- Connect vehicle battery.

Vehicles with three-spoke steering wheel (except Passat W8)

Removing

CAUTION: Observe safety precautions for working on airbags.

- Disconnect vehicle battery.







- Disengage steering column adjustment.
- Turn steering wheel - until the steering wheel spoke is in a vertical position. Pull out steering column entirely and push into upper position.
- Secure steering column adjustment.
- Position Airbag Release Tool T10119 in rectangular opening on rear side of steering wheel.
- Press Airbag Release Tool T10119 in direction of arrow and pull airbag unit out of locking mechanism.
- Turn steering wheel back 180 ° and disengage second catch on the opposite side.
- Turn steering wheel to center position (wheels in straight-ahead position).

- Disengage securing clip of harness connector - 1 - and disconnect connector - 2 -.

Installing







- Connect connector - 2 - to airbag unit and lock with securing clip - 1 -.
- Install airbag unit into steering wheel.

NOTE: Catches of airbag unit must engage audibly!

- Switch ignition on.

CAUTION: Make sure no one is in the vehicle.

- Connect vehicle battery.
