- Scan Tool VAG 1551 with cable VAG 1551/3
Work sequence
- First print out the control unit identification and thereby the previous control unit coding as follows:
- Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 (VAG 1552) and select the engine electronics control unit with the "address word" 01; Connecting Scan Tool and selecting engine electronics control unit. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool
The Scan Tool VAG 1551 display will show the control unit identification, e.g.:

Coding 0002 WSC XXXXX
- Print out the control unit identification by pressing the Scan Tool print button.
Only for vehicles from model year 2002 >
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:

Continued for all vehicles
- Press -> button.
- Press buttons 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q button.

Select function XX
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove wiper arms and plenum cover:
- Release connector from control unit and pull off.
- Press the securing tab -arrow- to left and pull the control unit out.
Installing
- Place the new control unit into the retaining frame.
- Install control unit connector and lock.
- Check the previous coding and the coding of the new control unit
- Match engine control unit to electronic immobilizer.
- Check DTC memory and, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase. [1][2]Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
