Condition

Customer states "Transmission does not feel as if it is engaged immediately after shifting from Park to Drive position".

Technical Background
M.Y.2002 and 2005 vehicles with 2.0L engines (Ultra low emission vehicles (ULEV)) which are equipped with AG4 transmission, have what is called a "Cold neutral control" strategy.

The "Cold neutral control" strategy is used to warm up the catalyst and aid in emissions reduction.

Without "Cold neutral control":
- The K1 clutch is immediately engaged when shifting from "P" to "D" requiring more power from the engine (resulting in increased emissions).

With "Cold neutral control":
- The K1 clutch is not engaged when shifting from "P" to "D" immediately (transmission remains in neutral until brake pedal is released) requiring less power from the engine (resulting in less emissions).

"Cold neutral control", activation requirements
"Cold neutral control" is only necessary when the catalyst is cold.

"Cold neutral control" in "D" activates only if all the following conditions are met:
- Engine running.
- Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temp.is below 40 degree C.
- Brake pedal depressed (brake light switch activated).
- Accelerator pedal NOT depressed.
- Speed = 0.
- Shift lever is moved from "P" to "D" for the first time after ignition is switched ON.
- "Cold neutral control" is activated a maximum one time as long as the previously listed conditions are met.If any one of these conditions are not met, "Cold neutral control" will not activate.
- If "Cold neutral control" is activated and the ignition key is cycled "OFF" then "ON", "Cold neutral control" will reactivate as long as the ATF Temp.is below 40 degree C.

Production Solution
Not Applicable

Service
Condition is NORMAL, no action is required.

To check (bypass) "Cold neutral control":
- Shift from "P" to "D" then from "D" to any other position then back to "D" and "Cold Neutral control" is deactivated.

NOTE: If a vehicle where (after the brake is released) the transmission does not go into gear and the VAS 5051 or shift pattern box displays the correct signals, there may be an internal transmission problem.Be sure to analyze this condition appropriately.
