Readiness Code (Function 15), Generating

Special tools and equipment
VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) or VAG1552 mobile scan tool with VAG1551/3 adapter cable

Test conditions
- Vehicle stationary
- Battery (B+) voltage at least 11.5 V
- Automatic transmission selector lever in "P" or "N" position
- All electrical consumers (e.g. lights and rear window defroster) switched off
- Coolant temperature must be 5 - 95 °C. See display group 04, display field 3
- Intake air temperature less than 60 °C. See display group 04, display field 4
- Connect VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) (VAG1552), then switch ignition on and select Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- by pressing buttons -0- an -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01.

Step 1: Check DTC memory

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory"function 02 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Indicated on display (number of stored DTCs, or "No DTC recognized").


X DTC recognized ->


If one or more DTCs are stored, the stored DTCs will be displayed and printed out one after the other.

If a DTC is stored:
- Using the DTC table repair malfunctions on print-out:
- Check print-out against DTC table and repair all malfunctions as necessary.

If no DTCs are stored:
- Press -> button.

Step 2: Erase DTC memory

- Press buttons -0- and -5- to select "Erase DTC Memory" function 05, and press -Q- button to confirm input.

NOTE:
When erasing DTC memory, the readiness code is also erased.

NOTE:
If the ignition is switched off between "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory," DTC memory will not be erased.

- Press button.

Step 3: Adaptation of throttle valve control module to ECM

- Check specified value in display field 3 and 4.


Display Group 060:






Terminate engine basic setting after minimum of 30 seconds by pressing -> button.

Step 4:
- Start engine and run at idling speed.

NOTE:
During the test sequence the engine must not be switched off.

Step 5: Oxygen sensor (O2S) aging diagnostic (cycle duration monitor)

NOTE:
Engine speed will be increased by engine control module.


- Check specified value in display fields 1-4.

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) - J220- the display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."


Display Group 034:






If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> button.
- Check DTC memory.

If the specified values are attained:
- Release brake pedal.
- Press -C- button.

Step 6: Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) diagnostic

NOTE:
The diagnostic will only be terminated if the oxygen sensor aging diagnostic is first successfully completed.

- Depress brake pedal and hold.

NOTE:
The engine control module will increase the engine speed.

- Check catalyst conversion (amplitude ratio) in display field 3:
Specification: max. 0.50
- Allow engine to run at increased idle until specification: "Cat B1 OK" is displayed in display field 4.

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) - J220- the display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."

NOTE:
The diagnostic takes approx. 100 seconds.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> button.
- Check DTC memory.

If the specified values are attained:
- Release brake pedal.
- Press -C- button.

Step 7: Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system diagnostic

NOTE:
The diagnostic will only be terminated if the oxygen sensor aging diagnostic is successfully completed first.

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) - J220-, the display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."


Display Group 077:






If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> button.
- Check DTC memory.

If the specified values are attained:
- Press -C- button.

Step 8: EVAP system and fuel tank leak detection

NOTE:
The engine must not be loaded during this diagnostic because the diagnostic will be interrupted and will not be started again until the engine is revved-up.

- Allow engine to continue running at idle until "EVAP OK." is displayed in display field 4.

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) - J220-, the display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."


Display Group 070:






If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> button.
- Check DTC memory.

If the specified values are attained:
- Press button -3- (VAG1551) or button (VAG1552).

- Allow engine to run at idle until specification "Syst. OK." is displayed in
display field 4.

If "Reed op." appears:
- Open fuel tank cap briefly to allow pressure in fuel tank to dissipate (this will close reed contact).

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- the display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."


Display Group 071:






NOTES:
- If the display in display field 4 changes from "Test ON" to "Test OFF" during diagnostic, and "Abort" is displayed in display field 2, repeat EVAP system/ fuel tank leak detection.
- The fuel filler cap must be opened briefly before repeating the diagnostic.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> button.
- Check DTC memory.

If the specified values are not attained:
- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End output" function 06 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.
