Technical Background
MIL is ON, one or more of the following DTCs is / are stored in DTC memory.

P1358 Ignition activation cyl. 2 Open circuit
P1361 Ignition activation cyl. 3 Open circuit
P1361 Ignition activation cyl. 3 Open circuit
This condition may be caused by a faulty ground (GND) connection.
Production Solution
No production change required.
Service
Install new ground wire from coil connector to Ground 12 under battery as follows:
For materials required, see -> Required Parts and Tools.
NOTE:
Do not substitute any other part numbers for wires, butt splice, or seal.

^ "Vehicle batteries", in Owner Manual, Tips and Advice
^ Remove battery (see Repair Group 27, Battery, Removing and installing, for the appropriate model).
Golf, Jetta:
^ Locate and remove terminal from coil connector T6d / 1 (see appropriate Wiring Diagram if necessary).
^ Terminate this wire by neatly taping it to the existing wire harness (do not cut wire).
New Beetle
^ Locate and remove terminal from coil connector T6a / 1 (see appropriate Wiring Diagram if necessary).
^ Terminate this wire by neatly taping it to the existing wire harness (do not cut wire).
Golf, Jetta, New Beetle:
^ Cut repair wire 000 979 225 to 22 inches (558.8 mm) and install new seal; then slide seal near terminal, see -> Required Parts and Tools.
^ Cut repair wire 000 979 230 to 12 inches (304.8 mm).
^ Splice repair wires together using butt splice; see -> Required Parts and Tools. Do not substitute any other wires when making and assembling the repair wire.
^ When finished: correct repair wire length = 34 inches (863.6 mm)
^ Heat butt splice using a heat gun from Repair Kit. see -> Required Parts and Tools.
Golf, Jetta:
^ Insert terminal into cavity T6d / 1 of coil connector.
For New Beetle:
^ Insert terminal into cavity T6a / 1 of coil connector.
Golf, Jetta:
^ Remove cap nut from stud GND 12 under battery tray.
^ Ground terminals, cap nut, and stud should be clean and free of paint or corrosion.
^ Route new ground wire along existing harness to ground stud GND 12.
New Beetle
^ Remove cap nut from stud GND 12 (near fender).
^ Ground terminals, cap nut, and stud should be clean and free of paint or corrosion.
^ Route new ground wire along existing harness to ground stud GND 12.
Golf, Jetta, New Beetle:
^ Fasten new wire using previously removed cap nut.
^ Tightening torque = 9 Nm +/- 1 Nm
^ Secure using tie straps as necessary.
^ Reinstall battery (see Repair Group 27, Battery, Removing and installing, for the appropriate model).
