Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), (Function 03)



Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), activating

The Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) activates the following components in the stated sequence:
1 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-
2 - Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-
3 - Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay - J299-
4 - Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve -N156-
5 - Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-

Special tools and equipment
- VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) or VAG1552 mobile scan tool with VAG1551/3 adapter cable
- VAG1598/31 test box
- Multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent)
- VAG1527B voltage tester
- VW1594 adapter set
- Wiring diagram


Requirements







- Main fuses OK







- Fuses 10, 28, 29, 32, 34 and 43 OK


NOTE:
- Checks using the output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) can only be carried out if the engine is not running and the ignition is switched on.
- The output DTM sequence will be aborted if the engine is started or a rotational impulse is recognized.
- During the output DTM sequence individual components will be activated until advancing to the next component by pressing the button.
- Components are checked audibly or by touch.
- The electric fuel pump will run during the complete output DTM.
- The output DTM sequence will be aborted after 10 minutes.
- Run engine briefly first if there is a requirement to repeat the output DTM.

Test procedure
- Connect VAG1551 or VAG1552 mobile Scan Tool (ST).
- Switch ignition on and select Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- by pressing buttons -0- and -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

- Operate scan tool taking into account the information on the display.
- Press buttons -0- and -3- to select "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" function 03.

Activating Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-

- Press -> button.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80


The Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80- must click until the next component is activated by the pressing -> button.

If the valve clicks, but a malfunction is still suspected (valve does not open or close):
- Disconnect hose from pressure retention valve from solenoid valve.
- Connect an auxiliary hose to vacant valve connection.
- Blow into auxiliary hose during Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) in direction of throttle valve control module.
Valve must open and close.

If the solenoid valve does not click:







- Disconnect 2-pin harness connector from Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80- (arrow).







- Connect VAG1527B voltage tester using adapter cables from VW1594 to detached harness connector.
The LED must flash (bright/darker).

If LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve - N80-.
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory.
- Display readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If DTC memory has been erased, or the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from permanent battery (B+) voltage, the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cover.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.







- Check wire for open circuit between test box sockets 64 and 2-pin harness connector terminal -2- using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
- Additionally, check wire for short circuit to battery positive (B+) and Ground (GND).
Specified value: infinity ohms
- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal -1- and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. See "Engine Control Module (ECM), Replacing", Service and Repair

Activating Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-
- Press -> button.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary air injection valve -N112



The secondary air injection valve must run until the next component is activated by pressing the -> button.

If the relay does not click:







- Disconnect 2-pin harness connector from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112- (arrow)







- Connect VAG1527B voltage tester using adapter cables from VW1594 to detached harness connector.
The LED must flash (bright/darker).

If LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-.
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory.
- Display readiness code Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If DTC memory has been erased or the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from permanent battery (B+) voltage, the readiness code must be generated again Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cover.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.







- Check wire for open circuit between test box socket 44 and 2-pin harness connector terminal -2- using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive (B+) and Ground (GND).
Specified value: infinity ohms
- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal -1- and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. Refer to "Engine Control Module (ECM) Voltage Supply Open Circuit, correcting", Service and Repair

Activating Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-
- Press -> button.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary air pump relay -J299


The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- activates the secondary air pump motor which runs at intervals, until output diagnostic test mode is terminated by pressing the -> button.

If the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor - V101- does not run at intervals:







- Disconnect 2-pin harness connector from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- (arrow).







- Connect VAG1527B voltage tester using adapter cables from VW1594 to detached connector
The LED must flash.

If LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101-.
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory
- Display readiness code Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If DTC memory has been erased or the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from permanent battery (B+) voltage, the readiness code must be generated again Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If LED does not flash, but Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- clicks:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Check wire between Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- and terminal -1- and body Ground (GND) for open circuit.

If no malfunction in wire is detected:







- Pull Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- (arrow) off relay plate in control module protective housing.

NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground (GND) strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.
- Using wiring diagram, check wire between Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- terminal -2- and terminal -2- on relay plate for open circuit.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

If no malfunction in wire is detected:







- Using wiring diagram, check voltage supply contact 1 (terminal 30) for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.

If voltage supply is OK:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory
- Display readiness code

If DTC memory has been erased or the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from permanent battery (B+) voltage, the readiness code must be generated again Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If LED does not flash and Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- does not click:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Disconnect Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- (arrow) from relay plate in control module protective housing.

NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground (GND) strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.

- Introduce output diagnostic test mode again and activate Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.







- Using adapter cables from VW1594 connect VAG1527B voltage tester to terminals 3 and 4 on relay plate.
The LED must flash.

If LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory
- Display readiness code Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If DTC memory has been erased or the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from permanent battery (B+) voltage, the readiness code must be generated again Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Using adapter cables from VW1594 connect VAG1527B voltage tester to terminal 1 of relay plate and body Ground (GND).
The LED must light-up.

If LED does not light-up:







- Using wiring diagram, check wire between terminal 1 of relay plate and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

If LED lights up:
- Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cover.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.
- Check wire between test box socket 46 and terminal -4- on relay plate for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. Refer to "Engine Control Module (ECM), Replacing", Service and Repair

Activating Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve -N156-:
- Press -> button.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve -N156



The twin path Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve must click until the next final control is activated by pressing the button.


NOTE:
If there is sufficient vacuum the twin path Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve -N156- activates the Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve actuating element. The change-over valve is located below the intake manifold, on the right-side next to the secondary air injection valve. Checking Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve. Refer to "Intake Air System, Checking For Leaks (Unmetered Air)/Testing and Inspection/Fuel Delivery and Air Induction" under "Powertrain Management" Testing and Inspection

If the valve does not click:







- Disconnect 2-pin harness connector from twin path Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve -N156- (arrow).







- Using adapter cables from VW1594 connect VAG1527B voltage tester to detached harness connector.
The LED must flash (bright/darker).

If LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve -N156-.
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory
- Display readiness code

If DTC memory has been erased or the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from permanent battery (B+) voltage, the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cover.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.







- Check wire between test box socket 104 and 2-pin harness connector terminal 4 on relay plate for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
- Using wiring diagram, check wire between terminal 1 of relay plate and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. Refer to "Engine Control Module (ECM), Replacing", Service and Repair

Activating Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-:
- Press -> button.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-



The fuel system Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144- must click until the output DTM is terminated by pressing the button.

If the diagnostic pump does not click:
- Remove right-rear wheel housing liner.







- Disconnect 3-pin harness connector (arrow) from Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-.







- Using adapter cables from VW1594, connect VAG1527B voltage tester to detached harness connector terminals -2- and -3-.
The LED must flash (bright/darker)

If LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace fuel supply system Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-.
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory
- Display readiness code

If DTC memory has been erased or the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from permanent battery (B+) voltage, the readiness code must be generated again Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cover.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.







- Check wiring for open circuit between test box and 3-pin harness connector using wiring diagram.
Terminal -1- + socket 80
Terminal -2- + socket 25
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

- Additionally, check wire for short circuit to battery positive (B+) and Ground.
Specification: infinity ohms







- Using wiring diagram, check wire between terminal 3 of relay plate and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. Refer to "Engine Control Module (ECM), Replacing", Service and Repair
