Observations For Fuel System Servicing
Fuel supply system, safety precautions
WARNING:When doing any repair work, especially in the engine well, due to the cramped conditions, pay attention to the following:
^ Route all sorts of pipes (e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, activated charcoal filter system, coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum pipes and hoses) and electrical wiring so that the original positions are restored.
^ Make sure sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.
Observe the following when removing and installing the fuel gauge sensor or fuel pump (fuel delivery unit) from a full or partly full fuel tank:
WARNING: Fire hazard! Do NOT have anything in the area that can ignite gasoline!
WARNING: Fuel supply lines are under pressure! Before removing from hose connection wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.
^ Before starting work, switch on exhaust extraction system and place an extraction hose close to the sensor opening in the fuel tank to extract escaping fuel fumes. If no exhaust extraction system is available, a radial fan (as long as motor is not in air flow) with a displacement greater than 15 m3/h can be used.
^ Prevent skin contact with fuel! Wear fuel resistant gloves!
^ For safety reasons, fuse 28 must be removed from the fuse holder before opening the fuel system since the fuel pump can be activated via the door contact switch of the driver's door.
