Control Arm: Service and Repair



Control Arm, Removing and Installing

Removing
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove wheel.





- Remove noise insulation panel (arrows).





- Remove left-side noise insulation (arrows).

Vehicles with TDI engine
- Remove intake air duct between charge air cooler and turbocharger.

Continued for all vehicles
- Remove right-side noise insulation.

Vehicles with automatic transmission





- Remove bolts (arrows).

Continued for all vehicles
- Mark installation position of ball joint bolts on control arm.





- Remove bolts (arrows).
- Disconnect drive axle from transmission drive flange.
- Pull wheel bearing housing with ball joint out from control arm.
- Remove hex bolt -3- from control arm.





- Remove hex bolts -1- and -2- and remove control arm.

Vehicles with automatic transmission
- Push engine/transmission assembly forward (i.e. using lever).
- Remove hex bolt -1- and remove control arm.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Fastener/location - Tightening torque

Ball joint to control arm: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) + 1/4-turn 90°
Use new bolts!

Front mounting bolt for control arm: 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) + 1/4-turn 90°
Use new bolts!

Rear mounting bolt for control arm: 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) + 1/4-turn 90°
Use new bolts!

Connecting link to control arm: 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)

Drive axle to transmission drive flange: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)


Transmission support






- Bolts -A-: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) + 1/4-turn 90°

- Bolts -B-: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) + 1/4-turn 90°

- Always replace bolts.
