Diesel Injection Timing Control Range, Checking
The EGR function occurs in Function 04 (basic setting). By using this procedure, the EGR valve is cycled every 10 seconds, so that in the measurement block 003 the extreme values can be read for EGR (Mass Air Flow sensor) in channel 3.

Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool and start engine and let idle.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address word 01: "Engine electronics"

System in Basic adjustment
820/min early 7.9 before TDC 47%
- Specification (Display zone 3): 7.0 to 9.0° BTDC
After approx. 10 seconds, the Diesel injection adjuster is moved into the retarded position.

820/min late 4.4 before TDC 32%
- Specification (Display zone 3): 3.0 to 5.0° BTDC
If specifications not obtained
- Check Cold Start injector as follows:
- Press -> button.
- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06: "End output".
- Press Q button to enter input.
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Disconnect harness connector from Diesel injection pump.
- Measure resistance between connector terminals 2 + 3.
- Specification: 12 to 20 Ohms
If specification not obtained
- Replace Cold Start injector N108.
- Display the Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If DTC memory was erased
- Set the Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If specification obtained
- Connect VAG 1598/22 (or 1598/31) Test Box to ECM wiring harness.
- Check wiring for open circuit between Test Box and 10-pin harness connector using Wiring diagram.
Up to MY 1999
- Terminal 9 + socket 79
- Terminal 10 + sockets 2 + 28
From MY 2000
- Terminal 9 + socket 114
- Terminal 10 + sockets 1 + 2
- Wire resistance: 1.5 Ohms maximum
- Check wires for shorting to: one another, Ground and Battery +
- Specification: Infinity Ohms
If wiring OK
- Replace Engine Control Module J248.
- Display the Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If DTC memory was erased
- Set the Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
