DTC Memory Checking
Special tools
- Scan Tool VAG 1551 with cable VAG 1551/3
NOTE: The VAG 1552 Scan Tool can be used instead of the VAG 1551; however, the VAG 1552 is not equipped with a printer.
Work sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool.
- Start engine and let idle.
- Press -0- and -1- buttons to select Address word 01: "engine electronics"
Display will appear as shown (example only)

If engine will not start
- Switch ON ignition.
- Press Scan Tool PRINT button to switch ON printer.
- PRINT button must light up.

Select function XX
- Operate Scan Tool taking displayed information into account.
- Press -0- and -2- buttons to select Function 02: "Check DTC memory"
- Press -Q- button to enter input.
The number of malfunctions stored or "No malfunction recognized!" will appear on display.
X Malfunctions recognized!
If one or more DTCs are stored
Stored malfunctions will be displayed and printed out one after the other.
After stored malfunctions have been printed out, display will appear as shown

NOTE: Scan Tool will be required for further malfunction displays; leave engine idling and Scan Tool connected.
- Eliminate all malfunctions using the appropriate DTC table. Testing and Inspection
- Erase DTC memory.
- Set Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
- Display Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If DTC memory has been erased
- Set Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If no DTCs stored
- Press -> button.
Display will appear as shown

- Press -0- and -6- buttons to select Function 06: "End output".
- Press -Q- button to enter input.
