Instrument cluster, removing and installing


CAUTION!
Before working on the electrical system:
- Determine the correct coding for the anti- the ft radio.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- After reconnecting battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows.
- Observe the remarks and work sequence instructions for malfunction recognition and malfunction displays before removing the instrument cluster.



WARNING!
- Special safety precautions apply to vehicles equipped with airbags.
- Refer to Airbag CAUTIONS and WARNINGS.



Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed







- VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST)
- Optional: VAG 1552 or VAS 5051 Diagnostic Testing and Information System







- VAG 1551/3A, or VAG 1551/3B Adapter cable

Removing
If replacing a malfunctioning instrument cluster with a new one, note odometer reading on existing cluster prior to removal.


NOTE: Speeding wheel removal is not necessary. For clarity, steering wheel is shown removed in the following illustrations.
- Release steering wheel tilt/telescope lock, lower steering wheel and pull out completely. Lock into position.







- Release trim ring -1-from instrument cluster mounting -2- clips.







- Remove two screws (arrows).
- Tilt instrument cluster slightly toward passenger compartment.
- Disconnect harness connectors at rear of instrument cluster.
- Remove instrument cluster.

Installing
- Install in reverse order of removal.
- After completing installation, check function of instrument cluster.

If the instrument cluster has been replaced because it was malfunctioning, and a functional check does not display a malfunction:
- Code instrument cluster.
- Adapt odometer display.
- Where applicable, code Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface -J533- according to vehicle market version and equipment level variables
- Where applicable, adapt instrument cluster for anti-theft immobilizer functions.
