Sealing Flange (Front), Removing and Installing
Sealing flange (front), removing and installing
Special tools and equipment
^ 2080 A sleeve (Only for oil seals with annular spring)
^ 3415 Counter support
^ VAG1331 Torque wrench 5 to 50 Nm (3 7 to 37 ft. lbs.)
^ VAG1332 Torque wrench 40 to 200 Nm (30 to 148 ft. lbs.)
^ T10053/1 Assembly tool (Only for PTFE oil seals).
^ Hand drill w/ plastic brush insert (not shown)
^ D 176 404 A2 Silicone sealant (not shown)
^ Flat scraper (not shown)
^ Protective goggles (not shown)
Removing
- Remove ribbed belt.
- Remove camshaft drive belt.
- Remove crankshaft toothed belt sprocket by counterholding sprocket with 3415.
- Drain engine oil.
- Remove oil pan.
- Unbolt front sealing flange.
- Remove sealing flange, release using light blows with a rubber hammer if necessary.
- Remove sealant residue on engine block with flat scraper.
- Cover seal with a clean rag.
- Remove sealant remains on sealing flange with a rotating plastic brush (wear protective goggles).
- Clean sealing surface, must be free of oil and grease.
Installing
Note:
^ Check expiration date on sealant before using.
^ Install the sealing flange within 5 minutes of applying the silicone sealant.
- Cut-off tube nozzle at forward mark (nozzle diameter approximately 3 mm, or 1/8 inch)
- Cover sealing surface of oil seal with a clean cloth before applying sealant.
Note: The sealing bead must not be thicker than the specification, otherwise excess sealing compound could enter the oil pan and block the oil suction pipe strainer.
- Apply silicone sealing compound, as shown, to clean oil pan sealing surface. Sealing compound bead must be:
^ Thickness of sealant bead -arrows-: 2 to 3 mm (3/32 to 1/8 inch)
^ Apply continuous bead of sealant, passing inside of bolt holes in oil pan -arrows-.
- Apply silicone sealant bead (as shown) to a clean sealing surface on the sealing flange.
- Immediately install sealing flange and slightly tighten all bolts.
Only oil seals with annular spring
Note: Use guide sleeve 2080A to install sealing flange with oil seal already installed.
Only PTFE oil seals
Note: Use guide sleeve T10053/1 to install sealing flange with oil seal already installed.
Continued for all oil seals
- Tighten sealing flange securing bolts using alternate sequence.
^ Tightening torque: 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)
- Remove excess sealant.
- Install oil pan.
Note: After installing, allow sealant to dry for approximately 30 minutes before filling with engine oil.
- Install crankshaft toothed belt sprocket and hold with 3415 counter-hold tool.
Tightening torque: 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.) plus additional 1/4 turn (90°)
Note: Thread and shoulder must be free of oil and grease.
- Install toothed belt and adjust valve timing.
- Install ribbed belt.
