Connecting and Selecting Functions


Scan Tool (ST), connecting
All functions previously performed with the VAG1551 or VAG1552 can also be performed using the new VAS5051 tester via operating mode vehicle self-diagnosis.

Special Tools and Equipment





^ VAS 5051 tester
^ VAS5051/1 or VAS5051/3 diagnostic cable

Note:
^ During On Board Diagnostic (OBD), the ABS function is switched off in the control module.
^ DTC memory can be erased after repair has been completed and DTC memory has been checked.





Connecting VAS5051, up to model year 2000
^ Remove cover in direction of arrow.
^ Connect VAS5051 tester to Data Link Connector (DLC) using VAS5051/1 or VAS5051/3 diagnostic cable with ignition switched off.





Connecting VAS5051, from model year 2001
^ Connect VAS5051 tester to Data Link Connector (DLC) using VAS5051/1 or VAS5051/3 diagnostic cable with ignition switched off.

Select operating mode:
^ Press "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" selection on display.

Select vehicle system:
^ Press "03 - Brake electronics" on display.

Display will indicate the control module identification and the coding.

Select diagnostic function:
Display shows all relevant diagnostic functions.
^ Select the desired function on display.
^ See repair procedures for further steps.

Note: The following test sequences are described for the VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST).

VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST), connecting and selecting functions
All functions previously performed with the VAG1551 can also be performed using the VAS5051 tester in operating mode "Vehicle Self Diagnosis":

Special Tools and Equipment





^ VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) or VAG1552 mobile scan tool





^ VAG1551/3 or 1551/3A adapter cable

The following warning lamps light up when the VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) is connected and the data link to the ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104- has been established:
^ ABS or ABS/EDL warning light -K47-.
^ Traction control indicator light -K86- (only installed in vehicles equipped with ASR).
^ Warning light for brake system -K118-.

Note:
^ During On Board Diagnostic (OBD), the ABS function is switched off in the control module.
^ DTC memory can be erased after repair has been completed and DTC memory has been checked.





^ Unclip cover for Data Link Connector (DLC) next to parking brake lever.
^ Connect VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) to Data Link Connector (DLC) using VAG1551/3 diagnostic cable with ignition switched off.

Note: If nothing is indicated on the display, check the harness connector for On Board Diagnostic (OBD),, Refer to ABS/Edl/ASR Bosch 5.3, Electrical Testing, Electrical Test; Test step 8 and 9.





^ Depending on the program, additional operating information can be printed out by pressing the HELP button of the VAG1551 scan tool.
^ The (arrow) -button is used for advancing through the program sequence.
^ The PRINT button is used for switching on the printer (lamp in button lights up).

^ Switch on ignition.
^ Switch printer on via the print-button (indicator lamp in button lights up).
^ Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 01.

^ Press buttons -0- and -3- (03 is the address word for "brake electronics").





Indicated on display
^ Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Note: Three warning tones will sound while the control module identification is checked.





and then, for example, the following is indicated:

Indicated:
^ The control module part number (8E0 614 111 R).
^ The system identification (ABS/ASR 5.3 Front).
^ The version number of the control module (e.g. D01).
First number: Hardware version of control module
Second number: Software version of control module
^ The coding (00003) is only required for vehicles with ASR, Refer to Code Control Module (Function 07), - "Code Control Module".
^ The workshop code, WSC XXXXX, must be entered in the VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST), otherwise coding is not possible. The workshop code is only required for vehicles with ASR.

If the control module identification does not appear; - Press buttons -0- and -1- (01 is the address word for "Check Control Module Version").
^ Press (arrow) button.

Note: Pressing the -HELP- button will print out an overview of all of the possible functions:

Note: If one of the following malfunction messages is indicated on the display, print out possible malfunction causes via the HELP button.





^ Fuse -S7- for the control module is a possible source of the malfunction.





^ Check whether ignition is switched on.





^ Malfunctions occurred while checking the control module identification (possible external sources?)
^ Check diagnostic cable as well as the voltage supply and Ground (GND) connection for the ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104-, Electrical Test, Refer to ABS/Edl/ASR Bosch 5.3, Electrical Testing
^ After repairing potential malfunction cause, reenter address word 03 for "Brake electronics" and press -Q- button to confirm.
