Diversity Antenna System (W8 Only)

General information
The diversity antenna system is used in conjunction with the "Premium VI - Monsoon" radio system installed as standard equipment in US/CDN Passat W8 models from m.y. 2002.

The antenna system with diversity function improves and optimizes the overall radio reception in a vehicle. This is achieved by using four separate FM antennas integrated into the rear window(s).

Before troubleshooting or servicing, technicians must be familiar with the functions and operation specifics of the diversity antenna system. Always read the radio owner's manual and review all radio, tape player and CD Changer functions, as well as system/function descriptions as covered in applicable Self Study Programs.

Diversity antenna system, components
The diversity antenna system consists of:
- Radio system "Premium VI - Monsoon"
- Four separate diversity antennas integrated into rear window(s)
- Four separate antenna amplifiers matched to the antennas
- Antenna Selection Control Module -J515-

Diversity antennas - Sedan, location
The AM antenna is integrated into the rear window above the rear window defogger.
Four separate FM antennas are integrated with the rear window defogger.

Diversity antennas - Wagon, location
The antennas are integrated with the rear side windows.
A combined AM/FM antenna and a separate FM antenna is located in the left rear window.
The remaining FM antennas are located in the right rear window.

Function
The strength and quality of the amplified signals received by any of the four diversity system antennas is continuously monitored and evaluated by the radio unit. The evaluation of the antenna signal is output via an Intermediate Frequency (IF) to the Antenna Selection Control Module -J515- which routes the various antenna signals to the radio. The evaluation data is processed by -J515- and it actively selects the system antenna that provides the best reception under the existing conditions (diversity function).
- The continuous, active switching between system antennas is not audible.
