Work Sequence

Shift mechanism (work sequence), disassembling and assembling
Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required





- VW 421 Tube





- VW 423 Tube

Disassembling





- First remove stop buffer -15 from cable lever 17-.
- Shift selector lever -14- to Tiptronic position and then remove frame -20-.
- Move selector lever to position "2".
- Disengage locking cable lever-38- by lifting it out of its mounting and remove it from the mounting bracket -22-.
- Shift selector lever to position "D".
- Carefully lever spring clip for Tiptronic position -19- out of mounting bracket -22-.
- Pull out locking plates -11- for mounting bushes -10- of selector lever 14-.
- Press out mounting bushes -10- of selector lever 14- outward using a screwdriver.
- Remove complete selector lever 14-.
- Disassemble selector lever.
- To remove the mounting -40 for Tiptronic position of selector lever 14-, unclip locking lugs (Qty. 3) on mounting bracket -22 outward and remove mounting -40 inward.
- Push out fulcrum pin -26- for locking pawl -24 using punch. To do this, support mounting bracket-22- on tube VW 423.
- Remove selector lever lock solenoid -25 together with locking pawl -24 upward.
- Carefully lever spring clip -18 for selector position out of mounting bracket -22-.
- Place cable lever-17- in park position.
- Push out left then right-hand fulcrum pin -23 outward in that order using punch.
- Pull cable lever 17- with detent -16- in park position upward out of mounting bracket -22-.
- Unclip detent -16 from cable lever 17-.

Assembling
- Clip detent -16 in cable lever 17-.
- Push cable lever -17- with detent -16- in mounting bracket -22 from above with opening -arrow first.
- Drive both fulcrum pins -23 of cable lever 17- with detent -16- in mounting bracket -22- onto stop. Support mounting bracket from inside when doing this.
- Press spring clip with roller -18 for selector lever position in its mounting in mounting bracket-22- onto stop.
- Push selector lever lock solenoid -25 together with locking pawl -24 in mounting bracket -22 from above.
- Carefully drive in fulcrum pin -26 for locking pawl -24-. Support mounting bracket-22- on tube VW 423 when doing this.
- Push Tiptronic position mounting -40- in mounting bracket -22 from inside. Retaining lugs (Qty. 3) must engage.
- Insert complete selector lever 14- in mounting bracket -22-.
- Hook selector lever -14- in cable lever -17 at top and bottom.
- Push both mounting bushes -10- for selector lever 14- in mounting bracket -22 from front and rear.
- Fit locking plates -11- of mounting bushes-10- in mounting bracket so that angled ends point inward.
- Push in spring clip for Tiptronic position -19- in its mounting in mounting bracket-22- onto stop.
- Move selector lever to position "2".
- Place locking cable lever -38 in mounting bracket-22- and press in until it can be felt to engage in both mounting positions.
- Check locking function of locking cable lever -38-. It must engage in detent -16- and block selector lever with selector lever 14- in position "P"
- Shift selector lever-14- in Tiptronic position.
- Place frame -20 on mounting bracket -22 (reinforced side upward) and insert stop buffer -15- in cable lever -17-.
- Install selector mechanism.
