Automatic Transmission Shift Change Signal, Checking

Diesel Direct Fuel Injection Engine Control Module -J248- receives a gear change signal from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) via the CAN-Bus wire. The engine Diesel Direct Fuel Injection Engine Control Module -J248- briefly reduces the amount of fuel injected. This reduces torque and gear change jolt.

Special tools and equipment
- Scan Tool VAG 1551 or vehicle system tester VAG 1552 with cable VAG 1551/3
- Test box VAG 1598/31
- Hand multimeter VAG 1526 or multimeter VAG 1715
- Adapter set VAG 1594
- Wiring diagram

Test sequence
- Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 (VAG 1552) and select engine electronics control unit with the "Address word" 01. When doing this the engine must be running at idling speed. (Connecting Scan Tool and selecting engine electronics control unit. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool)

WARNING: If test equipment is operated from the front seat and vehicle is involved in an accident injury may result. Secure Scan Tool to rear seat.

Indicated on display:

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX

- Press buttons -0- and -8- for the function "Read measured value block" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

Indicated on display:

Read measured value block ->
Enter display group number XXX

- Press buttons -0-, -0- and -9- for "Display group number 9" and confirm entry with -Q- button.
- Preform road test with a 2nd person to observe display.

Observe the valid safety precautions when carrying out a road test.

Read measured value block 9 ->
3240 rpm 4.8 mg/h 50.0 mg/h

- Observe figure displayed in display field 3 when changing into 2nd gear:
Specification: Briefly less than 51.0 mg/h

NOTE: Data transfer is slow, it is possible that the display of the specification is delayed.

- Press the -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the -Q- button.
- Switch off ignition.

If the specification is not obtained:







- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control unit wiring harness.
- Check wiring from engine control unit to gearbox control unit for open/short circuits.
