Tie rod, removing and installing
Special tools and equipment required
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench
^ VAG 1332/5 Open jaw insert, 34 mm (1.339 inch) AF
^ VAG 1275 Pliers
Removing
The tie rods can only be removed/installed with the steering gear removed.
Removing and installing power assisted steering gear, Refer to Steering Gear, Service and Repair, Removal and Installing
- Seal line connections on power assisted steering gear if not already done.
- Clean outside of power assisted steering gear in vicinity of the boot.
- Open hose clips and push boot back.
- Clamp steering gear in a vice and unscrew the tie rod.
Installing
Install in reverse order.
Tightening torque:
Tie rod to power steering gear 75 Nm (55.3 ft. lbs.)
Installing boot
- Check boot for wear (cuts, cracks) and make sure sealing surfaces are clean.
- Install boot, but first turn the tie rod so that the tie rod ball joint shank is in the installation position.
Note:
^ Only use genuine clamp-type clips.
- Tighten clamp with pliers VAG 1275.
- Install power steering gear.
