Definitions
These explanations refer only to this assembly group: Automatic transmission 01V - 5-speed. The definitions are not necessarily valid in general.
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
Transmission fluid for automatic transmission
ATF pump
Supplies the automatic changing of gears, all lubrication points (except front final drive and center differential) and torque converter with ATF.
ATF level
Fill height of ATF in the transmission. The function and comfort of gear changes requires conscientious observance and checking of the ATF level. To check the oil level, observe instructions given.
Automatic transmission 01V
It is characterized by a further development of the dynamic shift program (DSP) and two planetary gear sets.
Brakes
They switch with the clutches in combination with the individual forward and reverse gears of the planetary gear set and provide the various forward gear ratios. The brakes are supported on the transmission housing as opposed to the clutches.
Data bus
Transportation of data. To do this, the electrical signals are brought into a certain format (BUS).
Torque converter
Transfers the engine torque to the automatic transmission and acts as a drive-away clutch. The torque converter also includes the lock-up clutch.
DSP (Dynamic shift program)
Self-diagnosis
The capability of the control module:
to recognize faults,
to react to faults,
to store faults,
to register faults and make them available in the read measured value block.
Performing electrical check
A targeted check of the electronic components by performing certain measurements.
Performing vehicle self-diagnosis
Connecting vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051 in order (among other functions) to interrogate fault memory, perform final control diagnosis or read measured value block.
Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051
VAS 5051 replaces and supplements all functions that were performed previously using fault readers VAG 1551 or VAG 1552.
Allows access to the latest and most comprehensive technical information via modes of operation "vehicle diagnosis", "test instruments" and "guided fault finding".
Freewheel/stator
Ensures the torque is increased in the torque converter when driving off.
Freewheel/transmission
Technically simplifies the gear changes without interrupting the power and ensures a constant gear change quality.
Transmission vehicle speed sensor-G38 and Sender for transmission output RPM -G195
The sender records the transmission output speed and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module.
Transmission fluid temperature sensor-G93
Monitors the temperature of the ATF to prevent the transmission from overheating. It is located on the valve body within the wiring harness to the solenoid valves.
Sensor for Transmission RPM -G182
The sensor records the speed of the planetary carrier of the Ravigneaux planetary gear set and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module.
Guided fault finding
A mode of operation in vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
By means of the "guided fault finding", the user interacts with the equipment in a dynamic search program to find and rectify faults via "vehicle self diagnosis" and "test instruments".
Kickdown switch -F8
The kickdown switch is integrated in the accelerator cable. When the accelerator pedal is depressed fully, the transmission changes down for acceleration.
Clutches
They switch with the brakes in combination with the individual forward and reverse gears of the planetary transmission and provide the various forward gear ratios.
Wiring
Routing of electrical wiring and components in vehicle.
Shift lock solenoid N110
Located in the selector mechanism close to the selector lever. Prevents movement (involuntary) of the selector lever from positions "P" and "N" as long as the brake pedal is not depressed.
Solenoid valves -N88- to -N90
Open and close the oil channels to the clutches and brakes upon receiving signals from the control module.
Solenoid valve -N91- and pressure regulating valve 1 -N215
Continuously regulates (as a modulation valve) the amount of ATF required.
Solenoid valves -N92- and -N93- and pressure regulating valve 2 -N216- and 3 -N217
These modulation valve continuously regulate the hydraulic pressure during gear changes to enable the clutches and brakes to open and close smoothly.
Solenoid valve -94- and pressure regulating valve 4 -N218
Regulates (as a modulation valve) the opening and closing of the lock-up clutch.
Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) switch -F1 25
Electrical switches with various tasks.
Emergency running
If a sensor fails the control module selects replacement signals and introduces replacement functions. If this is not possible the emergency running is introduced.
Emergency running is a "Condition of the control module" when certain faults are recognized it guarantees the further driving safety, protects the transmission against damage and at the same time impairs the driving characteristics only as much as is necessary.
Parking lock
The selector lever controls the parking lock wheel when the vehicle is stationary and prevents the vehicle from rolling (involuntary).
Planetary transmission
Is a mechanical component of the automatic transmission and is switched via the clutches and brakes without loss of power.
Planetary gear set
Automatic transmission 01V has two planetary gear sets (a Ravigneaux set and a simple planetary gear set) and allows selection of five forward gears and a reverse gear.
Valve body
Located on the bottom of the transmission and is enclosed in the ATF pan. Its valves regulate the pressure and distribute it via the oil channels to the switch elements (clutches and brakes).
Automatic transmission control module -J217
The electronic control module defines the shift points with the dynamic shift program (DSP). This monitors the function of the transmission via the self-diagnosis. If a component or sensor fails an emergency running program ensures the vehicle can still be driven.
AF
Abbreviation for across flats.
Tiptronic
With an additional selector gate on the right of the normal selector gate, it is now possible to manually shift up a gear by moving the selector lever to plus (+) and manually shift down a gear by moving the selector lever to negative (-).
There are automatic transmissions 01V without Tiptronic also and therefore only one selector gate for the selector lever as before.
Overlapping gear changes
Controlling the respective selector elements via the control module ensures the gear changes between selector elements are performed smoothly.
TCC (Torque converter lock-up clutch)
Transmits the engine torque mechanically to the transmission.
Transmission Range selector lever display -Y6
Shows the position of the selector lever and the gear selected with Tiptronic in a display in the instrument cluster.
Selector lever lock
Prevents movement (involuntary) of the selector lever from positions "P" and "N" as long as the brake pedal is not depressed.
Ignition key withdrawal lock
Ensures that the ignition key can only be withdrawn when park position is selected and in addition mechanically locks the selector lever in this position.
