Timing Cover: Service and Repair







Sealing flange and dual mass flywheel, removing and installing

CAUTION: Crankshaft, piston and conrods must not be removed.

Note:
^ The engine must not be set down on the oil sump or the liquid gasket between the upper and lower sump will be damaged. Use engine stand T10116 to hold engine.
^ Secure engine in engine and transmission stand VAS 6095 when repairing.
^ The sealing flange (Post 10) can be removed and installed with the cylinder head installed.
^ Servicing clutch:

1. 100 Nm - 1/4 turn (90°) further
^ Replace
^ Counter-hold with T10069 to loosen and tighten, Refer to Seals and Gaskets, Engine, Front Crankshaft Seal, Service and Repair Replacing crankshaft oil seal -vibration damper end
^ Tighten using torque wrench VAG 1601
2. Vibration damper
^ Removing and installing ribbed belt, Refer to Drive Belt, Service and Repair
3. 10 Nm
4. Toothed belt guard
5. Crankshaft toothed belt sprocket
6. Toothed belt
^ Mark direction of rotation before removing
^ Check for wear
^ Do not kink
^ Removing, installing and tensioning, Refer to Cylinder Block, Service and Repair. Removing, installing and tensioning toothed belt drive for balancing shafts
7. Oil seal
^ PTFE version of oil seal
^ Identification: no inner coil spring
^ Do not additionally oil or grease the oil seal sealing lip
^ Before installing, remove oil remains from crankshaft journal with a clean cloth
^ Replacing, Refer to Seals and Gaskets, Engine, Front Crankshaft Seal, Service and Repair
8. Aluminum cylinder block
9. 20 Nm
^ Observe sequence when tightening 1
10. Sealing flange
^ Clean sealing surface before installing
^ Coat sealing surfaces to cylinder block with sealant D 188 800 A1
^ Sealing sealing surfaces to covers, Refer to Intake/Exhaust Valve, Adjustment. Adjusting timing
11. Seal
^ Replace only in conjunction with rear sealing flange item 10
12. 10 Nm
^ Observe sequence when tightening - Fig. 1
13. Oil seal
^ PTFE version of oil seal
^ Identification: no inner coil spring
^ Do not additionally oil or grease the oil seal sealing lip
^ Before installing, remove oil remains from crankshaft journal with a clean cloth
^ Replacing, Refer to Seals and Gaskets, Engine, Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal, Service and Repair
14. Dual-mass flywheel/drive plate
^ Removing and installing drive plate, Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain, Flywheel M/T, Service and Repair
15. Bolt
^ Counter-hold with T10069 to loosen and tighten
^ Replace
^ Two-mass flywheel: 60 Nm + 1/2 turn (180°) further
^ Drive plate: 60 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°) further

Note: The cover must be installed within 5 minutes of applying sealing compound.





^ Tighten screws in sequence indicated as follows and note different screw lengths.
