Ignition key lock (with automatic transmission), checking





- Turn ignition key to position -B- "Ignition on".

Must be possible to move selector lever out of "Park" position.

If selector level will not move, the ignition lock cable must be adjusted;

, Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain, Manual Transaxle

Note:
^ It must be only possible to remove the ignition key when selector lever is in "Park" position!
^ When ignition key is in position "Ignition off" it must not be possible to move selector lever out of "Park" position!

Following work sequence affects only vehicles with ESP

- Install steering angle sensor -G85- until tabs engage.

Remove transportation protection when a new steering angle sensor-G85- is installed.





- Position the steering angle sensor -G85- in center position;
Yellow spot must be visible in hole -1-.
The marks -arrow- must align.

Make sure this position is kept.

Basic setting for steering angle sensor -G85- must be checked after the following work.
^ After removing or replacing the steering angle sensor -G85-;
^ After removing or replacing the steering column;
^ After removing or replacing the steering column switch;
^ After removing or replacing the steering lock housing;
^ When the steering wheel is repositioned.

- Perform steering angle sensor -G85- basic setting.
- Refer to Powertrain Management; Performing self-diagnosis.

The continuation of the work sequence is valid for all vehicles





Installing ignition switch
If the ignition switch has been removed, the distance -dimension "a"- between steering wheel and spring coil housing must be readjusted.
1. Steering wheel
2. Housing for spring coil
3. Clamping bolt for ignition switch
a - = approx. 2.5 mm (0.10 inch)

- Install ignition switch.





- Install steering wheel so that the marked line -arrow A- on the steering wheel and the center punch mark -arrow B- on the steering column align.

Steering columns supplied as replacement parts do not have a center punch mark.
- Install bolts for steering wheel and tighten.
- Align ignition switch horizontally.





- Set gap -a- approx. 2.5 mm (0.10 inch).
- Tighten clamping bolt -3-.
- Remove steering wheel again.
- Install trim, in reverse order.
- Install bolts for steering wheel and tighten.
Multi point socket head bolt: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
- Make one center punch mark on multi-point socket head bolt.

Multi-point socket head bolts that already have five center punch marks must be replaced!

- Then Install steering wheel in "straight ahead" position.

If a new steering column has been installed, the center point can be determined via a test drive.





- Mark steering column, after steering wheel middle position has been determined.

A - Mark on hub of steering wheel
B - Center punch mark on steering column

- Install airbag module.

When connecting battery make sure that no one is in vehicle!
