Removal
Timing Chains
ALLDATA Editor Note: Volkswagen does not provide a step by step timing chain removal procedure. The procedure depicted below is for the BJS engine, the BDF is similar.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
• Camshaft Bar -T10068 A-
• Counternut-Holder Tool -T10069-
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) -V.A.G 1331-
• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) -V.A.G 1332-
• Silicone Adhesive Sealant -D 176 501 A1-
Removing the camshaft timing chain:
- Remove the transmission.
Remove the dual-mass flywheel.
- Remove the oil pan.
- Remove the intake manifold. Service and Repair
- Remove the cylinder head cover.
- Remove the coolant thermostat housing.
- Disconnect the connecting hose -3- and the vacuum hose 2- from the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) combination valve.
- Reposition the clamp -1- and remove the coolant hose.
- Mark and disconnect the electrical connectors.
1. - Camshaft position sensor -G40-
2. - Camshaft position sensor 2 -G163-
3. - Camshaft adjustment valve 1 -N205-
4. - Exhaust camshaft adjustment valve 1 -N318-
- Rotate the crankshaft using the vibration damper bolt, in engine rotation direction to the Top Dead Center (TDC) cylinder mark -arrow-.
- The camshaft lobes -A- for cylinder 1 face each other.
- Install the camshaft bar -T10068 A- into both camshaft grooves. If necessary, slightly rotate the camshaft back and forth using an open end wrench.
- Remove the chain tensioner -arrow-.
- Remove the bolts -1 through 3- and remove the cover horizon from cylinder head. Take care not to damage the cylinder head gasket in the process.
- Remove the bolts and remove the sealing flange -arrow- horizontally from the cylinder block. Take care not to damage the cylinder head gasket in the process.
- Remove the seal seal from the sealing flange.
- Remove the camshaft bar -T10068 A-.
- Loosen and remove the sprocket bolt -arrow-.
- Secure the vibration damper using the counter -hold tool- T10069- when doing so.
- Remove the small sprocket and the camshaft timing chain.
- Carefully remove the camshaft timing chain from behind the cylinder head gasket rib.
Removing the oil pump timing chain from the intermediate shaft:
- Remove the chain tensioner with tensioner rail bolts -arrows-.
- Remove the large sprocket and the oil pump timing chain.
Note: If the camshaft adjuster and the guide rail must also be replaced, perform the replacements before the timing chain is reinstalled.
