Affected Vehicles
Seat, Heater, Inoperative
Condition
The front passenger seat heater may be inoperative after the M3 (Passat) or VZ (Jetta, Golf) campaign is performed.
Technical Background
1). The overload protection found in the campaign seat heater switch has an open circuit.
2). A fracture of the strands in the seat heater may have occurred.
Affected chassis number ranges:
Golf/GTI: 1J_3_036883 to 1J_5_005853
Passat: 3B_2_402046 to 3B_3_331308
Jetta Sedan: 9M_2_ 097493 to 9M_4_128467
Jetta Wagon: 1J_2_483642 to 1J_5_016145
Production Solution
Modified seat heater mat.
Service
Tip:
Jetta/Jetta Wagon/Golf/GTI
Use wiring diagram # 69 (Heated seats, from May 1999) for cloth or leather seats.
Tip:
Passet/Passet Wagon
Use wiring diagram # 80 (Heated leather seats, from October 2000) for cloth or leather seats.
Step 1
^ Check whether the campaign has been completed, see ElsaWeb Campaign / Action Information inquiry screen.
If the campaign has not been completed:
^ Proceed to appropriate campaign circular (VZ / M3).
Passenger Side Seat Heater Switch Wiring Harness End Connector Reference
Step 2
^ Remove passenger side seat heater switch, see Repair Manual Group 72 in ElsaWeb. DO NOT disconnect wiring harness connector.
^ Switch ignition key ON.
^ Passenger side seat heater switch OFF.
^ Using a DVOM to ground, Measure voltage at pin 4 and pin 5 of the seat heater switch wiring harness connector.
No voltage on one or both circuits indicates a open circuit (open fuse, open wire or harness connection). Repair appropriately, otherwise proceed to step 3.
Step 3
^ Switch the ignition OFF.
^ Disconnect the seat heater switch from the connector.
^ Use an ohm meter and measure resistance between pin 2 and pin 6 of the seat heater connector.
If the resistance is less than 2.5 ohms:
^ Proceed to step 4
If the resistance is greater than 2.5 ohms:
^ Proceed to step 5
Step 4
^ Connect the seat heater switch wiring harness connector.
^ Switch the ignition ON.
^ Place seat heater switch in position 1.
^ Measure voltage at pin 2 of the seat heater switch wiring harness connector.
If there is no voltage:
^ Replace seat heater switch.
Step 5
^ Remove seat trim per Repair Manual Group 72 in ElsaWeb and access seat heater element wiring harness connector.
^ Measure resistance between pin 3 and pin 4 of the seat heater element male green connector:
If the resistance is greater than or equal to 3.1 ohms:
^ Replace the seat heater element including the seat heater switch. Use a non campaign switch part number that can be found in ETKA.
If resistance is less than 3.1 ohms:
^ A wiring problem exists between the seat heater switch and seat heater element. Repair appropriately.
