- V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool (or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552) with manual V.A.G 1551/3

Test conditions
- Vehicle is parked
- In vehicles with automatic transmissions, the selector needs to be in either the "P" or "N" positions.
- All electrical devices, such as e.g. lights and rear window defroster need to be turned off.
- Intake air temperature is less than 60 °C, see Display group 04, display field 4
- Coolant temperature must be at least 80 °C, see Display group 04, display field 3
Procedure
- Connect V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool ((V.A.G 1552). Start engine and select engine control module with "address word" 01. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool
Step 1: Check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory
Display shows
Quick data transfer HELP
Select function XX
- Press 0 and 2 buttons for "Check DTC memory" function and end entry by pressing Q key.
The display will show either the number of DTCs or "No DTC recognized" will be indicated.
X DTCs recognized!
If a DTC is stored:
- Repair malfunctions that were printed out using DTC table: Testing and Inspection
If no DTCs are stored:
- Press -> key.
Step 2: Erase DTC memory

Select function XX
- Press 0 and 5 keys for "Erase DTC memory" function 05 and confirm entry by pressing Q key.
NOTE: The readiness code is reset/erased every time the DTC memory is erased.

DTC memory is erased!
NOTE: If ignition was switched off between the steps "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory" the DTC memory will not be erased.
- Press -> key.
Step 3: Fuel system diagnosis

If diagnosis of engine control module is initiated, display in field 4 will change from "Test OFF"to "Test ON".
- Continue to let engine run at idle until field 4 displays:
Specified value: "Syst. OK"
- Depress accelerator pedal until until engine reaches over 3000 RPM.
If the specified value is not obtained:
- Check DTC memory.
If the specified value is obtained:
- Press C key.
Step 4: Diagnosis of EVAP system (fuel tank vent system)
- Press 0, 7 and 0 keys for "Display group number 70" and confirm entry by pressing Q key.

If diagnosis of engine control module is initiated, display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON"
- Continue to let engine run in idle until result shows in display 4:
Specified value: "TVV OK"
If the specified value is not obtained:
- Check DTC memory, eliminate all possible malfunctions and erase DTC memory.
If the specified value is obtained:
- Press C key.
Step 5: Diagnosis of knock sensors

- Press 0, 2 and 8 keys for "Display group number 28" and confirm entry by pressing Q key.

- Engage brake pedal and hold.
- Fully depress accelerator pedal.
Engine rotation is increased by engine control module to approx. 2400 RPM.
If diagnosis of engine control module is initiated, display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Continue to let engine run at an increased speed until display field 4 displays results:
Specified value: "Syst. OK"
- Disengage both accelerator and brake pedals.
If the specified value is not obtained:
- Check DTC memory, eliminate all possible malfunctions and erase DTC memory.
If the specified value is obtained:
- Press C key.
Step 6: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor aging before catalytic converter

- Press 0, 3 and 4 keys for "Display group 34" and confirm entry by pressing Q key.

Engine rotation is increased by engine control module to 2300 RPM.
If diagnosis of engine control module is initiated, display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
Catalyst temperature in display field 2 must be at least 350 °C
- Continue to let motor run at an increased speed until results are displayed in field 4:
Specified value "B1-S1 OK"
- Disengage accelerator and brake pedals.
If the specified value is not obtained:
- Check DTC memory, eliminate all possible malfunctions and erase DTC memory.
If the specified value is obtained:
- Press C key.
Step 7: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor operational readiness behind catalytic converter

Step 9: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor after catalytic converter

- Continue to let engine run at a higher speed until result is displayed in field 4:
Specified value: "B1-S2 OK"
- Disengage both accelerator and brake pedals.
If the specified value is not obtained:
- Check DTC memory, eliminate all possible malfunctions and erase DTC memory.
If the specified value is obtained:
- Press C key.
Step 10: Diagnosis of secondary air system and tank venting

- Press C key.
Step 11: Diagnosis of catalytic converter

- Press 0, 4 and 6 keys for "Display group 46" and confirm entry by pressing Q key.

- Depress brake pedal and hold.
- Fully depress accelerator pedal.
Engine speed is increased by engine control module to approx. 2000 RPM.
- Continue to let engine run at a higher speed until catalyst temperature in field 2 increases to at least 550 °C
If diagnosis of engine control module is initiated, display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Continue to press brake and accelerator pedals until result is displayed in field 4:
Specified value: "Cat B1 OK"
- Disengage both accelerator and brake pedals.
If the specified value is not obtained:
- Check DTC memory, eliminate all possible malfunctions and erase DTC memory.
If the specified value is obtained:
- Press C key.
Step 12: Diagnosis of camshaft control

Engine speed is increased by engine control module to approx. 1200 RPM.
If diagnosis of engine control module is initiated, display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Continue to press brake and accelerator pedals until result is displayed in field 3:
Specified value: "Syst. OK"
- Disengage both accelerator and brake pedals.
If the specified value is not obtained:
- Check DTC memory, eliminate all possible malfunctions and erase DTC memory.
If the specified value is obtained:
- Press -> key.
