Output Diagnostic Test Mode, performing
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) activates the following components in the specified sequence:
Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1551 scan tool (or VAG 1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG 1551/3B cable
- VAG 1598/31 adapter cable
- VAG 1594 connector test kit
- VAG 1526 multimeter or VAG 1715 multimeter
- VAG 1527B voltage tester
- Wiring diagram
Test requirements
- Fuses no. 7, 28, 29, 32 and 34 must be OK.
- Ignition switched on, engine not running
NOTE:
- Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is only possible with engine idle and ignition switched on.
- Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is aborted if engine is started or an RPM signal is recognized.
- In Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), individual actuators are activated until the next actuator is selected by pressing the -> button.
- Actuators are checked either acoustically or by touch.
- To repeat Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) without letting the engine run briefly beforehand, switch ignition off for approx. 2 seconds.
- The electric Fuel Pump (FP) runs during all of Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is terminated after 60 minutes.
Vehicles with engine code AWM from 05.01
NOTE:
- To select the actuator shown, press the -> key.
- The fuel pump will only run when the actuator is selected.
Procedure - all engine codes
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG 1552). Then switch ignition on and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01. (connecting scan tool and selecting ECM).

- Operate scan tool according to indications on display:
- Press buttons -0- and -3- to select "Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)" function 03.

03 - Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
Activating Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-:
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80-
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve must click until next actuator is activated by pressing the -> button.
If valve does not click:
I - Engine code ATW
II - Engine codes AUG, AWM
- Disconnect connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- and connect the VAG 1527B voltage tester to disconnected connector using VAG 1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.
LED blinks:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace solenoid valve.
LED does not blink:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG 1598/31 adapter cable to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 64+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
- Also check the wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal 2 and the Fuel Pump (FP) relay - J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
Activating secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-:
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Secondary Air Injection solenoid valve -N112-
Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve must click until next actuator is activated by pressing the -> button.
If valve does not click:
- Disconnect connector -2- from solenoid valve -2- and connect the VAG 1527B voltage tester to disconnected connector using VAG 1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.
LED blinks:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -2-:
LED does not blink:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG 1598/31 adapter cable to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 9+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
- Also check the wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal 2 and the Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
Activating secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-:
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Secondary Air Injection pump relay -J299-
The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay activates the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor and this runs in intervals until the next actuator is activated by pressing the button.
If the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run in intervals:
- Disconnect 2-pin connector from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor and connect the VAG 1527B voltage tester to disconnected connector using VAG 1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.
LED blinks:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101-:
If LED does not blink, but the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay does click:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Check wire between Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- terminal 1 and chassis Ground (GND) for open circuit.
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Remove Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay (arrow) from relay carrier in protective housing for control modules.
NOTE:
- Remove battery Ground (GND) strap if tools are necessary for removal of relays or control modules from the relay carrier.
- Obtain radio code for radios with anti-theft coding before disconnecting battery.
- Check wire between Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- terminal 2 and relay carrier terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Check voltage supply (terminal 30) for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- according to wiring diagram.
If voltage supply is OK:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-
If LED does not blink and Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay does not click:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay (arrow) from relay carrier in protective housing for control modules.
- Use auxiliary wires from VAG 1594 connector test kit to connect VAG 1527B voltage tester to terminals 3 and 4 of the relay carrier.
LED must blink.
LED blinks:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-
LED does not blink:
- Use auxiliary wires from VAG 1594 to connect 1527B voltage tester to terminal 3 of the relay carrier and to chassis Ground (GND).
LED must light up.
LED does not light up:
- Check wire between relay carrier terminal 3 and Fuel Pump (FP) relay for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
LED lights up:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG 1598/31 adapter cable to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 66 and terminal 4 on relay carrier for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
Activating wastegate bypass regulator valve -N75-:
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Wastegate bypass regulator valve -N75-
Solenoid valve must click.
If valve does not click:
- Disconnect connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- and connect the VAG 1527B voltage tester to disconnected connector using VAG 1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.
LED blinks:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace solenoid valve.
LED does not blink:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG 1598/31 adapter cable to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 104+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
- Also check the wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal 2 and the Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
Only for engine codes AUG and AWM
Activating valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205-:
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Camshaft adjustment
Valve 1 for camshaft adjustment -N205- must click until Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is ended by pressing the -> button.
If valve does not click:
- Disconnect connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- and connect the VAG 1527B voltage tester to disconnected connector using an adapter from VAG 1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.
LED blinks:
- Perform Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until the end.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace solenoid valve -2-.
LED does not blink:
- Perform Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DIM) until the end.
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected during this.
- Check wire between test box socket 115+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
- Also check the wire for short circuit to B+ and Ground (GND).
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal 1 and the Fuel Pump (FP) relay - J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
Activating Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-:
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Leak Detection Pump tank ventilation system
Diagnostic pump must start up in intervals.
If Fuel Pump (FP) does not start up:
- Remove 3-pin connector for Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-.
- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester to terminals 2+3 of disconnected connector using wires from VAG 1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.
LED blinks:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-
LED does not blink:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG 1598/31 adapter cable to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 80+3-pin connector terminal I for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
- Check wire between test box socket 25+3- pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
- Also check wires for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
If no malfunctions are found in wiring:
- Check wire between 3-pin connector terminal 3 and the Fuel Pump (FP) relay - J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
Only for engine codes ATW and AWM
Activating recirculating valve for turbocharger -N249-:
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Recirculating valve for turbocharger -N249-
Solenoid valve must click.
If valve does not click:
- Disconnect connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- and connect the VAG 1527B voltage tester to disconnected connector using VAG 1594 connector test kit.
LED must blink.
LED blinks:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace solenoid valve.
LED does not blink:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG 1598/31 adapter cable to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
- Check wire between test box socket 105+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
- Also check the wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal 2 and the Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
Activate brake system vacuum pump -V192-:
Only for vehicles with automatic transmission
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
17836/Literature
NOTE: Due to capacity related reasons, the tester card for the V.A.G 1551/52 cannot be updated any more. Therefore, the literature reference appears on the display. The original text appears on the VAS 5051.
Brake system vacuum pump -V192- must run audibly until output DTM is continued by pressing the -> button.
If vacuum pump does not run:
- Disconnect connector -1- from vacuum pump -2-.
- Use auxiliary wires from VAG 1594 connector test kit to connect VAG 1527B voltage tester to terminals 1 and 2.
LED must light up.
LED does not light up:
- Finish Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG 1598/31 adapter cable to control module wiring harness. Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected.
Checking activation:
- Check wire between test box socket 22+2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max: 1.5 Ohms
- Also check the wire for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
If no malfunctions are found in wire:
- Check voltage supply of vacuum pump according to wiring diagram:
If voltage supply and activation are OK:
- Replace the brake system vacuum pump -V192-.
Activate fuel injectors (N30 to N33):
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Cylinder 1 fuel injector -N30-
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Cylinder 1 fuel injector -N30-
Cylinder 1 fuel injector -N30- must click five times.
NOTE: Fuel Pump (FP) must run and the flowing noise must be clearly audible at the fuel pressure regulator. If Fuel Pump (FP) does not run, check activation.
- To switch to next fuel injector, press the -> button.
- Check all fuel injectors like this, according to the injection sequence.
If one of the fuel injectors is not activated (does not click):
- Check fuel injectors. Refer to "Fuel Injectors, Checking", Testing and Inspection
