Gasket for front final drive, replacing
- Observe general repair instructions.
Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required
- VAG 1383 A Engine/transmission jack with plate VAG 1359/2
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench
Removing
- Remove front exhaust system with catalyst.
- Support transmission from below with transmission jack VAG 1838 A and the respective plate 1359/2.
Vehicles with V6 engine
- Unscrew bolts -B-.
- Remove heat shield -C-.
- Unscrew bolts -B-.
- Remove heat shield -C-.
- Remove transmission mounting -D- and -H-.
The left and right-hand transmission brackets remain on the transmission.
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 or equivalent underneath.
- Unscrew bolts -1- to -14- on housing cover for front axle drive.
Carefully detach housing cover for front final drive from transmission housing. Otherwise gear wheels can drop out of transmission.
Gear wheels, which have been dropped on the floor, must not be used again. If this happens, the transmission must be replaced.
- Lift up housing cover for front axle drive.
Do not take out gear wheels for front final drive. Secure gear wheels to prevent from dropping out.
If the gear wheels are taken out, they must be reinstalled with the markings on the gears facing outward (away from transmission).
Installing
Install in reverse order but note following:
- Before installing, ensure that dowel sleeve -A- is correctly located.
- Fit gasket.
- Install housing cover for front final drive.
Tightening sequence:
- Stage 1: tighten bolts -1-, -2- and -3- hand-tight.
- Stage 2: tighten bolts -1- to -14- to the torque specified and in the sequence indicated.
- Install left and right-hand transmission brackets.
- Fill with ATF and check ATF level.
