ATF Level, Checking
ATF level, checking 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (AWD)
CAUTION: Wear eye protection.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:
^ Drip tray V.A.G. 1306
^ Torque wrench 550 Nm V.A.G1331
^ Torque wrench 40-200NM V.A.G 1332
^ ATF filler tool V.A.G1924
^ Diagnostic operation system VAS5051 A
^ Diagnostic cable, 3m with voltage supply VAS5051/1 or Diagnostic cable, 5m without voltage supply VAS5051/3
An auxiliary ATF cooler is installed in vehicles with 8-cylinder fuel-injection engine. For these vehicles, an extra ATF check must be performed.
Short description
The test is performed according to the overflow principle depending on ATF temperature.
The ATF level will vary according to the temperature of the ATF.
Checking ATF level at too low ATF temperature leads to overfilling.
Performing ATF level check when ATF temperature is too high will cause insufficient filling.
Over and underfilling lead to impaired functioning of transmission.
Test requirements:
^ ATF filler tool V.A.G1924 reservoir must be filled only with ATF permitted for automatic transmission 01V. ATF must not be mixed with other oils.
^ Transmission not in emergency running mode, ATF temperature not above 30°C.
^ Vehicle on a flat surface
^ Selector lever in "P", let engine run at idle.
^ All electrical consumers and A/C system must be switched off.
^ Drain plug with sealing ring - 1 - must always be replaced.
^ O-ring - arrow - for ATF check plug - 2 - must always be replaced.
^ ATF filling height - 3 - changes with ATF temperature.
^ Protective cap - 4 - with openings for ATF filler tool V.A.G. 1924. If reservoir is engaged into one of the openings, protective cap must not be pushed upward into oil pan while doing so.
VW ATF is available as a replacement part.
ATF level, checking
^ Secure container of ATF filler tool V.A.G1924 to vehicle.
^ For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - from exhaust pipe at noise insulation.
^ Remove noise insulation - arrows A and B -.
^ For vehicles with noise insulation - D -, remove bolts - arrows C -.
^ Connect diagnostic operation system VAS5051 A.
^ Connect tester VAS5051 A using diagnostic cable VAS5051/1 or VAS5051/3 to Data Link Connector (DLC) with ignition switched off and advance program until "Function-/component selection" is displayed.
^ Then press "Powertrain (Repair Group 01; 10 to 26; 28 to 39)".
^ After that, press "5 Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
^ Press "Functions".
^ Press "Check ATF level".
^ Press -> button.
At start of test, ATF temperature must not be more than 30°C.
^ Start engine.
^ Raise vehicle.
^ Place drip tray V.A.G. 1306 underneath.
^ Press -> button.
^ Bring ATF to test temperature.
Test temperature 35°C to 45°C
^ Remove ATF check plug in oil pan.
If ATF drips from opening:
ATF level is OK
Only a small amount of ATF should come out of the inspection hole when the engine is running.
^ Tighten ATF check plug with new O-ring to 80 Nm. The ATF check is now completed.
^ Switch off engine.
^ Install noise insulation.
If no ATF drips from the hole: Top off ATF
