Glossary, 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (AWD)
These explanations apply only to automatic transmission 01V - 5 speed All Wheel Drive (AWD). The definitions are not necessarily valid in general.
AF
Abbreviation for across flats.
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
Transmission oil for automatic transmission
ATF level
"Fill height" of ATF in the transmission. Function and gear selection comfort require a precise compliance and testing of ATF level. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V. To measure ATF level, observe the specifications.
ATF pump
Supplies ATF to automatic gear selection, all lubrication points (except front final drive and transfer case) and torque converter. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Automatic transmission 01V
It is characterized by an advanced Dynamic Shift Program (DSP) and has two planetary gear sets as well as a Parallel Axis-Torsen center differential (PAT). Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Brakes
They switch with the clutches in combination with the individual forward and reverse gears of the planetary gear sets and provide the various forward gear ratios. The brakes are supported on the transmission housing as opposed to the clutches. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
CAN-Bus
Transports data. The electrical signals are sent in specific formats (BUS). Further information on this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V and 186 The CAN-Bus.
Clutches
They switch with the brakes in combination with the individual forward and reverse gears of the planetary gear sets and provide the various forward gear ratios. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Diagnostic operation system VAS5051 A
VAS5051 A replaces and supplements all functions that were performed previously using fault read out device V.A.G. 1 551 or mobile scan tool V.A.G. 1 552.
Allows access to the latest and most comprehensive technical information via modes of operation 'Vehicle Self-Diagnosis", "Test Instruments" and "Guided Fault Finding".

DSP (Dynamic Shift Program)

Emergency running mode
If a sensor fails the control module selects replacement signals and introduces replacement functions. If this is not possible the emergency running is introduced.
Emergency running is a "State of the control module" when certain malfunctions are recognized it guarantees the safety of further driving, protects the transmission against damage and at the same time impairs the driving characteristics only as much as is necessary Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Freewheel/stator
Ensures the torque is increased in the torque converter when driving off.
Freewheel/transmission
Technically simplifies the gear changes without interrupting the power and ensures a constant gear change quality.
Front gear wheels
Three gear wheels in intermediate flange for front final drive, which are driven by the Torsen differential and which drive the front wheels via the drive pinion in the front differential.
Guided Fault Finding
An operating mode of diagnostic operation system VAS5051 A.
By means of "Guided Fault Finding", the user interacts with the equipment in a dynamic search program to find and repair malfunctions via "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" and "Test Instruments".
Ignition key removal lock
Ensures that the ignition key can only be withdrawn when park position is selected and in addition mechanically locks the selector lever in this position.
Initialization
A fixed setting activated by a specific program sequence.
Kick Down Switch F8
Kick down switch is integrated in Accelerator Pedal (AP) cable and in Throttle Position (TP) Sensor G79. Shifts transmission down for acceleration when Accelerator Pedal (AP) is depressed to stop. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch F125
An electrical switch with various tasks. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Oerlikon gear set
Consists of drive pinion and ring gear. An extremely quiet final drive bevel gear with offset axis for drive pinion and ring gear (Hypoid drive).
Overlapping gear changes
Controlling the respective selector elements via the control module ensures the gear changes between selector elements is performed smoothly. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Parallel Axis Torsen center differential (PAT)
Center differential with self-acting locking function. It prevents the individual axles spinning with snow, ice and mud. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Parking lock
The selector lever controls the parking lock wheel when the vehicle is stationary and prevents the vehicle from rolling (involuntary).
Perform electrical test
Thorough examination of the electronic components through measurement.
Performing Vehicle Self-Diagnosis
Connecting diagnostic operation system VAS5051 A in order (among other functions) to Check DTC Memory, perform output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) or read measured value block.
Planetary gear
Is a mechanical component of the automatic transmission and is switched via the clutches and brakes without loss of power.
Planetary gear set
Automatic transmission 01V has two planetary gear sets (a Ravigneaux set and a simple planetary gear set) and allows selection of five forward gears and a reverse gear. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Rear gear wheels
Two gear wheels in center differential, which are driven by the Torsen differential and which drive the rear wheels via the propshaft and rear final drive.
Selector lever lock
Prevents movement (involuntary) of the selector lever from positions "P" and "N" as long as the brake pedal is not depressed. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Self-diagnosis
The functions of the control modules:
recognize malfunctions,
react to malfunctions,
store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in memory,
Calculate measured values and display them in measuring value blocks. More information on this can be found in 180 5Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V and in the tester operating instructions.
Shift Lock Solenoid N110
Located in selector mechanism in vicinity of selector lever. Prevents movement (involuntary) of the selector lever from positions "P" and "N" as long as the brake pedal is not depressed. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Solenoid Valve I N88 to Solenoid Valve 3 N90
Open and close the oil channels to the clutches and brakes upon receiving signals from the control module. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Solenoid Valve 4 N91 and Automatic Transmission Pressure Regulating Valve 1 N215
Continuously regulates (as a modulation valve) the amount of ATF required. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Solenoid Valve 5 N92 and Solenoid Valve 6 N93 and Automatic Transmission Pressure Regulating Valve 2 N216 and Automatic Transmission Pressure Regulating Valve 3 N217
These modulation valves continuously regulate the hydraulic pressure during gear changes to enable the clutches and brakes to open and close smoothly. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Solenoid Valve 7 N94 and Automatic Transmission Pressure Regulating Valve 4 N218
Regulates (as a modulation valve) the opening and closing of the lock-up clutch. Further information on this subject can be found in self-study program no. 180.
Starting Interlock Relay J207
Reverse driving lights are activated via the relay with selector lever in position "R". The signal for this comes from MultiFunction Transmission Range (TR) Switch F125.
"Enables" via the starter relay with selector lever in position "P" and "N".
TCC (Torque converter lock-up clutch)
Transmits the engine torque mechanically to the transmission. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Tiptronic
With an additional selector gate on the right of the normal selector gate, it is now possible to manually shift up a gear by moving the selector lever to plus (+) and manually shift down a gear by moving the selector lever to negative (-).
There are automatic transmissions 01V without Tiptronic also and therefore only one selector gate for the selector lever as before.

Torque converter
Transfers the engine torque to the automatic transmission and acts as a hydraulic drive-away clutch. The torque converter also includes the lock-up clutch. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Torsional backlash
Measured at the head of a tooth on the circumference of tooth head when the drive pinion is stationary. The permissible backlash must be adhered to.
Transmission Control Module (TCM) J217
Electronic control module determines switch points with Dynamic Shift Program (DSP). Monitors transmission function via "On Board Diagnostic (OBD)". Driving capability is guaranteed via an emergency running program when components or sensors fail. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor G93
Monitors the temperature of the ATF to prevent the transmission from overheating. It is located on the valve body within the wiring harness to the solenoid valves. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Transmission Input Speed (RPM) Sensor G182
The sensor records the speed of the planetary carrier of the Ravigneaux planetary gear set and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Transmission Range (TR) Display Y6
Shows the position of the selector lever and the gear selected with Tiptronic in a display in the instrument cluster. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) G38 / Transmission Output Speed (RPM) Sensor G195
The sender records the transmission output speed and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module. Further information for this can be found in 180 5-Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
Valve body
Located on the bottom of the transmission and is enclosed in the ATF pan. Its valves regulate the hydraulic pressure and distribute it via the oil channels to the switch elements (clutches and brakes).
