Rear Final Drive, Removing and Installing

Rear final drive, removing and installing, 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (AWD)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench 40-200 NM V.A.G. 1332:

Engine-/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A with universal transmission support V.A.G. 1359/2:

Removing
^ Remove rear part of exhaust system.
^ Check whether there is a marking (colored marking) on propshaft and at flange/propshaft at rear final drive.





^ If this marking is not present, then mark in color the position of propshaft flange - arrow A - to rear final drive - arrow B - Disconnect propshaft from rear final drive and tie up.





^ Remove right and left shielding plates from rear final drive - arrows -.
^ Unbolt right and left drive axle and tie up.





^ Unscrew nuts - arrows - and remove cover plate - 1 -.





^ Place engine-/gearbox jack VAG 1383 A with universal transmission support V.A.G. 1359/2 under rear final drive.
^ Secure rear final drive using strap to universal transmission support.





^ Unscrew securing bolts from transmission support - arrows -.





^ Unscrew securing bolts from crossmember - arrows -.
^ Lower rear final drive.

Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

Always replace securing bolts for propshaft.
^ Always remove any remaining locking fluid from thread bores in flanged shaft for rear final drive. Cleaning can be performed using a thread tap.

Otherwise, the securing bolts can shear while screwing in.





^ Make sure that the markings on flange for propshaft - arrow A - and for rear final drive - arrow B - line up.
^ Remove seals for propshaft at rear final flanged shaft.
^ Clean rear final flanged shaft.

Sealing surface must be free of grease.
^ Pull off protective foil and apply seal.





^ Tighten securing bolts for transmission support - arrows -.





^ Bolt rear final drive tightly to crossmember - arrows -.





^ Install cover plate - 1 - and bolt tightly to crossmember - arrows -.
^ Install propshaft.
^ Check gear oil in rear final drive.
^ Install drive axles.

Install shielding plate to rear final drive.
