Speedometer drive wheel, replacing
(Transmission in vehicle)





Special tools and equipment
^ VW 681 Oil seal extractor
^ 2062 Drift
^ VAG 1331 Torque wrench
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench

Removing





- Remove cover from left wheelhousing (arrows).
- Remove sound insulation below transmission if part of original equipment.
- Remove front exhaust system with catalyst on vehicles with a V6 Diesel engine.





- Remove left side axle shaft protective plate (arrows) if part of original equipment. Third bolt cannot be seen in illustration.
- Disconnect axle shaft from flange shaft.

Vehicles with 8-cyl. injection engine
- Remove left axle shaft.

Continuation for all vehicles
- Place drip tray underneath.





- Remove securing bolt -A- for flange shaft -B-.
- Remove flange shaft.
- Pull out flange shaft oil seal -C- using VW 681.
- Remove speedometer sensor.
- Remove speedometer drive wheel -D- from grooves of differential by prying at connecting tabs (arrows) alternating sides.

Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse sequence. Note the following:
Installed position:





Drive wheel -D- connecting tabs (arrows) engage in grooves of differential.
- Drive in flange shaft oil seal -C- and install flange shaft.





- Install axle shafts -1- to flange shafts.
- Install left side axle shaft protective plate if equipped as standard (arrows). Third bolt cannot be seen in illustration.
- Fill transmission with gear oil and check level.
