Camshaft adjustment valve, checking

Camshaft adjustment is dependent upon load and revolutions. The camshaft adjustment electric valve switches oil pressure to camshaft adjuster (mechanical adjuster) which then adjusts the camshaft.

Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1551 Scan tool or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with cable V.A.G 1551/3

Test sequence
- Check camshaft adjustment solenoid activation via output diagnostic test mode.
If activation is OK:

- Measure resistance between solenoid valve contacts.
Specification:
If no fault can be found on the valves:
- Check function of camshaft adjuster.

Note: The vehicle must be driven by a second person when checking the camshaft adjustment.

WARNING! Secure scan tool to rear seat and operate from this position.

- Connect scan tool V.A.G 1551 (V.A.G 1552). Start engine and select engine control unit with "Address word" 01.

Indicated on display
- Press keys 0 and 8 for function "Read measured value block" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display
- Press keys 0, 9 and 0 for "Display group 90" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display: (1-4 = Display zones)

- Observe display zones 2, 3 and 4.
- Specifications (engine running at idling speed):
- Accelerate vehicle rapidly in first gear from stationary. Engine RPMs must rise to above 4100 rpm.

- Specification (full throttle above 4100 rpm):
- Press (arrow) key.
- Press keys O and 6 for function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q key.
- Switch ignition off.
If in display zone 3 and/or 4 a value between 6.0 and 16.0 is displayed, the following fault may be present:
The camshaft adjustment solenoid valve switches the oil pressure correctly to the relevant mechanical camshaft adjuster, but it cannot reach its final position (e.g. because it is tight/binding).
- Replace camshaft adjuster(s).
If no adjustment is shown in display zone 3 and/or 4:
- Replace camshaft adjuster(s).
