Engine Control Module (ECM), replacing
Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG 1551/3 Adapter
Procedure
- First, print out the old control module identification, and thus also its coding, as follows:
- Connect V.A.G 1551 scan tool (VAG 1552). Then switch ignition on and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01. (connecting scan tool and selecting ECM).
Display will indicate the control module identification and the coding, e.g.:
4B0906018P 1.8 R4/5VT Motr G 0001 ->
Coding 07501 WSC 00000
- Press the Print key on the Scan Tool (ST) to print out the control module identification.
- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End data transfer" function 06. Press -Q- button to confirm input.
Indicated on display:

Select function XX
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove cover of protective housing for control modules.
- Using a screwdriver, carefully pry off retaining bracket (arrow).
- Disengage connector from Engine Control Module (ECM) and then disconnect it.
- Remove old control module and insert new one.
- Check old coding and code new control module.
- Adapt new control module to throttle valve control module.
- In vehicle with cruise control: Check whether this function is activated. If "G" does not appear in control module identification, activate cruise control.
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
- Adapt kick-down shift point
Continuation for all vehicles
- Check DTC memory of new Engine Control Module (ECM) and erase if necessary.
- Perform idle test
- Re-generate readiness code.
