Gear selector mechanism, removing and installing

Removing
- Carefully pry cover off center console.

Vehicles to 10/2000
- Unscrew gear selector lever knob with cover.





Vehicles from 11/2000
- Destroy clip (arrow) and pull gear selector lever knob off with cover.





Continuation for all vehicles
- Remove gear selector lever housing cover (arrows).





- Remove gear selector lever housing securing nuts (arrows).

Vehicles with 6-cyl. Diesel engine
- Remove cover from engine.





- Remove heat shield from over turbocharger (arrows).





- Remove exhaust pipe securing nuts (arrows) at turbocharger manifold.





Continuation for all vehicles
- Remove sound insulation tray (arrows).
- Remove sound insulation tray bracket.





Vehicles with 6-cyl. Diesel engine
- Remove (arrows) exhaust system bracket -1-.
- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamp -2-.
- Remove front exhaust system with catalyst.

Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine
- Remove intermediate pipe of exhaust system.

Vehicles with 8-cyl. injection engine
- Remove front left and front right exhaust pipes.





Continuation for all vehicles
- Remove cover from left wheel housing, if present (arrows).
- Remove rear section of exhaust system.





- Remove heat shield from vehicle floor.
- Remove cover plate (arrows).
- Remove driveshaft.





- Place transmission jack VAG 1383A with 1359/2 under subframe and exert slight counter-pressure.
A - Block of wood





- Disconnect transmission mounting -1- from transmission support -2- and subframe (arrows).
- Using transmission jack VAG 1383A, lower transmission slightly.





Note:
^ When removing gear selector mechanism, do not, under any circumstances, pull ball head (arrow -A- of connecting rod -2- off selector rod -1- or the ball head will be destroyed.
^ To remove selector rod, first remove nut (arrow -B- and bolt (arrow -C-)





Remove selector mechanism from transmission as follows:
- Unbolt connecting rod -2- for selector rod from right side of transmission.
- Remove push rod -1- by unbolting hex socket head bolt.





- Remove nut -1- and pull gear selector lever -2- from selector shaft of transmission.
- Swing gear selector lever housing with selector rod and push rod down and remove.

Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse sequence. Note the following:
Installed position of connecting rod between transmission and selector rod on transmission:





Selector shaft cover has an additional threaded hole (arrow -A-).
This is used to secure the new version connecting rod between selector rod and transmission.








- Note various securing methods when installing connecting rod:
- Adjust selector mechanism.
- Install driveshaft.
- Adjust driveshaft.
Transmission mounting to transmission support and subframe
- Reconnect exhaust system and ensure it is not under stress.

Tightening torques
Gear selector lever housing to body 10 Nm
Selector rod to transmission 25 Nm
Push rod to transmission 40 Nm
Connecting rod to transmission 25 Nm
