Seal For Left Hand Flange Shaft


Seal for left hand flange shaft, replacing





- Observe general repair instructions.

Special tools, workshop equipment, test and measuring appliances and aux. items required
- VW 401 Thrust plate
- VW 402 Thrust plate
- VW 407 Press tool
- VW412 Press tool
- VW 681 Oil seal extractor
- 32-109 Tube





- 2040 Tube
- 3384 Drift
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench
- VAG 1332 Torque wrench
- VAG 1358 A Oil extraction unit

Removing flange shaft (left side)
- Loosen drive shaft/wheel hub bolt and wheel bolts while vehicle is standing on its wheels.
- Remove front wheels.





- Remove left-hand drive axle protective plate -arrows-. The third bolt cannot be seen in the illustration.
- Remove left-hand drive axle -1
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 or equivalent underneath.





- Unscrew inspection plug -arrow- and extract at least 0.5 liter of gear oil from the front final drive using VAG 1358 A.
It is essential that the oil is extracted from the front final drive, as otherwise gear oil could become mixed with ATF.
- Remove speedometer sensor.
- Remove bracket for connector from flange shaft bearing bracket.





- Unbolt flange shaft bearing bracket -arrows-.
- Pull out flange shaft.

Removing oil seal





- Remove circlip -arrow A- for grooved ball bearing.





- Press flange shaft out of flange shaft bearing bracket.
- Pull out flange shaft oil seal with VW 681.

Removing grooved ball bearing





- Press grooved ball bearing out of bearing bracket.

Installing grooved ball bearing





- Press new grooved ball bearing into bearing bracket.

Installing oil seal
- Apply gear oil to circumference and sealing lips of seal.
- Half fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease G 052 128 A1.





- Drive new seal in until press piece makes contact; take care to keep seal straight.
Installation position:
Lugs on drive gear must engage in slots on flange shaft.





- Fit speedometer drive gear onto flange shaft -arrow-.





- Press bearing bracket with grooved ball bearing onto flange shaft.





- Insert circlip -arrow A-.

Installing flange shaft (left side)





- Replace O-ring -arrow B- in flange shaft bearing bracket.





- Check that there are no sharp edges on transmission end of flange shaft -arrow-; deburr edges if necessary.
- Install flanged shaft.





- Unbolt flanged shaft bearing bracket -arrows-.
- Install connector holder to flanged shaft bearing mounting.
- Install speedometer sensor.





- Install drive axle -1-.
- With transmission installed, check gear oil in front final drive.

Vehicles with V6 engine
- Fit left-hand drive axle protective plate if fitted as standard -arrows-. The third bolt cannot be seen in the illustration.

Continued for all vehicles
- Install front wheels.
