Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Components of chain drive system, removing and installing
Note:
^ Cylinder bank 1 is located on the right-hand side when looking toward the front.
^ Cylinder bank 2 is located on left-hand side when looking toward the front.
1. Control housing
^ Cylinder bank 2
^ Lightly lubricate contact surfaces of oil seals before installing

3. Pivot pin, 18 Nm

^ For camshaft roller chain item 35
5. 20 Nm
6. Pivot pin, 18 Nm
^ For guide rail item 7
7. Guide rail
^ For camshaft roller chain item 12

^ Lightly lubricate contact surfaces of oil seals before installing

9. Exhaust camshaft adjuster
^ Cylinder bank 1
^ Identification: B 1 and AS
^ Observe installation position to camshaft roller chain
^ Rotate engine only when camshaft adjuster is installed
^ Installing,Adjusting valve timing, Refer to Intake/Exhaust, Adjustments
10. 60 Nm - 1/4 turn (90°) further
^ Replace
^ Contact surface of sender wheel must be dry around bolt head when assembled
^ To remove and install, counter-hold with 32 mm open jaw wrench on camshaft, Refer to Camshaft, Engine, Service and Repair
11. Intake camshaft adjuster
^ Cylinder bank 1
^ Identification: B1 and E7
^ Observe installation position to camshaft roller chain
^ Rotate engine only when camshaft adjuster is installed
^ Installing, Adjusting valve timing, Refer to Intake/Exhaust, Adjustments
12. Camshaft roller chain
^ Cylinder bank 1
^ Mark direction of rotation before removing (installation position) - -
^ Observe installation position to camshaft adjusters
^ Installing,. Adjusting valve timing, Refer to Intake/Exhaust Valve, Adjustments
13. Pivot pin, 12 Nm
^ For tensioning rail item 14
14. Tensioning rail
^ For camshaft roller chain item 12
15. Seal
^ Replace if damaged or leaking
16. Chain tensioner, 40 Nm
^ For camshaft roller chain item 12
^ Only rotate engine when chain tensioner is installed
17. 60 Nm - 1/4 turn (90°) further
^ Replace
^ Counter-hold with T10069 to loosen and tighten, Adjusting timing, Refer to Intake/Exhaust, Valve, Adjustment
18. Sprocket
^ For camshaft roller chain items 12 and 35
^ Installing, Adjusting timing, Refer to Intake/Exhaust, Valve, Adjustment
19. Chain tensioner with tensioning plate
^ For roller chain item 23
^ Lock chain tensioner with drill bit (diameter: 3.5 mm)
^ Only rotate engine with chain tensioner installed

^ Lock chain tensioner with drill bit (diameter: 3.5 mm)
^ Only rotate engine with chain tensioner installed

33. Exhaust camshaft adjuster
^ Cylinder bank 2
^ Identification: B2 and AS
^ Observe installation position to camshaft roller chain
^ Rotate engine only when camshaft adjuster is installed

34. Intake camshaft adjuster
^ Cylinder bank 2
^ Identification: B2 and E7
^ Observe installation position to camshaft roller chain
^ Rotate engine only when camshaft adjuster is installed

35. Camshaft roller chain
^ Cylinder bank 2
^ Mark direction of rotation before removing (installation position)
^ Observe installation position to camshaft adjusters

Note: Do not mark chain with a center punch or any similar means!

The copper link of the camshaft roller chain (arrow) must align with arrow -1- on camshaft timing adjuster.
