Cylinder Head Assembly Overview

• Components depicted here correspond to cylinder bank 1. They are different only as a mirror image of components for cylinder bank 2.

Cylinder heads with cracks between the valve seats can continue to be used without reducing service life, as long as the cracks have a max.width of 0.5 mm.





1 Connecting hose

• Vehicles with engine code BWF.

• To crankcase ventilation valve.

• Ensure seated tightly.

2 Sealing sleeve

• Vehicles with engine code BWF.

• Replace if damaged.

• Ensure seated tightly.

3 Bracket

• Vehicles with engine code BWF.

• For intake hose between air filter and intake manifold flap.

4 Acoustic cover

• Vehicles with engine code BWF.

5 Cylinder head cover

• Vehicles with engine code BWF.

• Always clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head cover with a clean cloth before setting in place.

• Replace seal together with cylinder head cover if damaged or leaking.

• Observe tightening sequence of bolts, refer to --> [ Tightening Sequence of Bolts for Cylinder Head Cover ]

6 Acoustic cover

• Vehicles with engine code BKW.

7 Cylinder head cover

• Vehicles with engine code BKW.

• Always clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head cover with a clean cloth before setting in place.

• Replace seal together with cylinder head cover if damaged or leaking.

• Observe tightening sequence of bolts, refer to --> [ Tightening Sequence of Bolts for Cylinder Head Cover ]

8 20 Nm

• Between control housing and cylinder head.

9 Cylinder head gasket

• Replace.

• Install new seal of the same strength, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Seal Identification ]

• Imprint of replacement part numbers - A - must be readable.

• After replacing replace entire amount of coolant.

10 Cylinder head

• Removing and installing, refer to --> [ Cylinder Heads ] Cylinder Heads.

11 Cylinder head bolt

• Replace.

• Observe sequence for loosening and tightening, refer to --> [ Cylinder Heads ] Cylinder Heads.

12 Sealing sleeve

• Vehicles with engine code BKW.

• Replace if damaged.

• Ensure seated tightly.

13 Connection piece

• Vehicles with engine code BKW.

• To crankcase ventilation valve.

• Ensure seated tightly.

- Tighten bolts in the sequence shown to 10 Nm.

1. Number of holes (specifies thickness of gasket) 1)

2. Control code (disregard)

3. Replacement part number

1) Cylinder head gasket is available in three different strengths, whereby the number of holes indicates the corresponding strength. Always install a new gasket of the same strength when replacing.
