Definitions

Definitions, 01M, 4 Spd. A/T
These explanations refer only to the automatic transmission 01M. The definitions are not necessarily valid in general.

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
Transmission oil for automatic transmission

ATF pump
A gear type pump driven by the torque converter.

ATF level
The fill level of Automatic Transmission Fluid in the transmission with the engine running.

Data bus
Transportation of data. To do this the electrical signals are brought into a certain format (bus). Further information on this can be found in Self-Study Program No. WSP 521 419 00, VW CAN Data Bus.

Data bus low (high)
The voltage used to transport the data is low (high). Further information on this can be found in Self-Study Program No. WSP 521 419 00, VW CAN Data Bus.

Torque converter
Hydraulic assistance for pulling away.

Self-diagnosis (On Board Diagnostic or OBD)
The capability of the control module:
to recognize faults,
to react to faults,
to store faults,
to register faults and make them available in the measured value block.

Performing self-diagnosis (On Board Diagnostic)
Connecting the Scan Tool to be able to interrogate the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) or fault memory.

Performing electrical check
A targeted check of the electronic components by performing certain measurements.

Transmission vehicle speed sensor -G38-
The sensor records the speed of the large sun wheel in the planetary gearbox and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module.

Vehicle speed sensor -G68-
The sensor records the speed of the output gear and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module (not to the speedometer).

Shift lock solenoid -N110-
Located in the selector mechanism near the selector lever. Prevents (unintended) movement of the selector lever from positions P and N as long as the brake pedal is not depressed.

Parking lock
The selector lever controls the parking lock wheel when the vehicle is stationary and prevents the vehicle from rolling (involuntary).

Planetary gearbox
Is a mechanical component of the automatic transmission and is switched via the clutches and brakes without loss of power.

Valve body
Located on the bottom of the transmission and enclosed in the ATF pan. Its valves regulate the pressure and distribute it via the oil channels to the switch elements (clutches and brakes).

Ignition key withdrawal lock
Ensures that the ignition key can only be withdrawn when park position is selected and in addition mechanically locks the selector lever in this position.
