Steering Control Module: Service and Repair
Servo motor with control module, removing and installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

^ 2 bolts M10 x 60
Removing
- Remove steering gear.
- Clean steering gear in area of servo motor with control module.
- Tension steering gear using 2 bolts M 10 x 60 as depicted in the illustration.
- Remove hydraulic thrust piece.
- Rotate steering gear in mounting bracket so that steering pinion points upward.
- Disconnect harness connector of sensor wire at Power Steering Control Module J500.
- To do so, press button - A - in direction of - arrow - and then disconnect connector.
- Unscrew mounting bolts - 1 - and remove servo motor with control module from steering gear housing.
Note:
^ When unscrewing bolts, secure servo motor with control module from falling down (with second mechanic if necessary).
^ If corrosion, damage, wear-out or first signs of soiling on steering rack can be seen, complete steering gear must be replaced.
^ If no grease film is visible on steering rack, steering gear must also be replaced completely.
^ The steering gear housing has 3 or 4 bores and also servo motors with 3 or 4 threads. Note the corresponding threaded connection. Three threaded connections are permitted when only 3 threaded connections are possible in a steering gear housing or in a servo motor.
Installing
- Pull a new sealing ring on to servo motor with control module.
Before installing, pinion and new sealing ring for servo motor must be coated with grease G 052 192 A1 supplied in the repair set.
CAUTION: Do not use other grease under any circumstances.
- Insert servo motor with control module into steering gear housing and tighten in diagonal sequence with new bolts - 1 -.
- Connect harness connector of sensor wire to Power Steering Control Module J500.
Connector must engage audibly.
- Install new hydraulic thrust piece.
Replacement part set contains a new hydraulic thrust piece among other items.
- Install steering gear.
- Align vehicle.
- Perform basic setting for Steering Angle Sensor G85 via Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing Info. System VAS 5051, "Guided Fault Finding".
- Then perform basic setting of steering system via Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing Info. System VAS 5051B "Guided Fault Finding".
