With Manufacturer's Scan Tool
Driving Range Signal, Checking
Vehicles with automatic transmission only
Engine control module receives following information from transmission control module:
Driving range selected (selector lever in 2/3/4/R/D) or
No driving range selected (selector lever in P or N)
Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G1551 scan tool or V.A.G1552 mobile scan tool with V.A.G1551/3B cable
- V.A.G1598/31 test box
- V.A.G1526 or Fluke 83 multimeter
- V.A.G1594 adapter set
- Wiring diagram
Test conditions
- Selector lever of the automatic transmission must be in "P" or "N" position.
Test sequence
- Connect V.A.G1551 scan tool (V.A.G1552). Switch ignition on and select engine control module with "Address word" 01. (Connecting scan tool and selecting engine control module.)

Select function XX
- Press keys 0 and 8 for function "Read measured value block" and confirm entry with Q key.

- Press keys 0, 5 and 6 for "Display group number 56" and confirm entry with Q key.
Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = Display zones)

- Observe display zone 4. The display must read
Specification: x x x 0 x "Neutral".
- Depress foot brake and select driving range. Display must jump to
Specification: x x x 1 x "Gear engaged".
If the specifications are obtained:
- Press -> key.
- Press keys 0 and 6 for "End output" function and confirm input with Q key.
- Switch ignition off.
If the display does not change:
- Check data bus. Testing and Inspection
