Fuel Delivery Unit, Removing And Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
- Ring nut spanner 3217
Removing
Requirements
- The fuel tank must not be more than 1/2 full.
Work sequence
- Check whether a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain radio anti-theft coding.
- With ignition switched off disconnect battery Ground strap.
- Fold rear seat bench forward.
- Remove cover from fuel delivery unit.
CAUTION: Fuel supply lines are under pressure. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.
- Disconnect 4-pin connector and supply and return lines from flange -arrows -.
NOTE: Press in locking ring on junction piece to release fuel lines.
- Seal lines so that fuel system is not contaminated by dirt etc.
- Unscrew union nut with ring nut spanner 3217.
- Pull fuel delivery unit and seal out of opening in fuel tank.
NOTE: If the delivery unit is to be replaced then drain old delivery unit before disposal.
Installing
- Install fuel delivery unit in reverse order of removal.
NOTE:
- Insert seal for fuel delivery unit flange "dry" into opening of fuel tank.
- Moisten inner side of seal with fuel only when installing fuel delivery unit flange.
- Take care not to bend the fuel gauge sender when installing the fuel delivery unit.
- Note installation position of fuel delivery unit flange: Mark on flange must align with mark on fuel tank -arrows -.
- Ensure fuel hoses are tight.
- After installing the fuel delivery unit, check that the supply, return and breather lines are still clipped onto the fuel tank.
- Interrogate the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memories of all control modules, repair faults if necessary and then erase DTC memory Vehicle diagnosis, Testing and Information system VAS 5051 ; Guided fault finding; Vehicle system test or Vehicle diagnosis, Testing and Information system VAS 5052; Vehicle self-diagnosis.
- Test drive vehicle and interrogate DTC memory of all control modules again.
NOTE: Observe applicable safety precautions during road test.
