Transmission Control Module (TCM), Replacing

Work procedure
Check control module identification of the previous Transmission Control Module (TCM) as follows:
- Connect diagnostic tester.
- Switch ignition on.
- Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 9: Vehicle information".
- Select the vehicle information "Test-ID 04: Calibration Identification".

Control module identification will be displayed, e.g.:
09G927750 AH 0001

- End diagnosis and switch ignition off.







- Remove inner cover, right plenum chamber, to do this, slide center cover -1- of plenum chamber forward out of catch and remove from instrument panel.







- Remove three bolts -1-.







- Lift right cover -1- of plenum chamber in center of instrument panel (arrow A) and thereby unclip (front edge clips, back edge clamps).
- Pull cover -1- toward vehicle center out of bracket underneath A-pillar (arrow B).

Vehicles with 01M transmission







- Remove mounting bolt (arrow).







- Open locking mechanism of connector in direction of -arrow- and disconnect connector from control module.

Vehicles with 09G transmission







- Remove securing nuts -arrows 3-.
- Open locking mechanism of connector in direction of (arrow -1-) and disconnect connector from control module -2-.

Continue for all vehicles
- Remove old control module.
- Insert new control module and bolt firmly.
- Connect connector to control module and lock.

Rest of installation is in reverse order of removal.
- Check whether new control module identification matches the old control module identification.

Vehicles with 09G transmission
When harness connectors are disconnected from Transmission Control Module (TCM) or the battery is disconnected, all adaptation values in the control module are erased. DTC memory content will remain intact however. If the engine is started after this, rough, uneven idle can result for a short time. In this case, the readiness code must be generated again.

Continue for all vehicles
If Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-was replaced:
- Code the Transmission Control Module (TCM):

- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
