Safety Precautions When Working on Airbag
CAUTION:
- Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
- Battery Ground (GND) strap must be disconnected when working on airbag system.
- No waiting time is necessary after disconnecting battery.
- When connecting airbag system to a voltage source, no person may be inside vehicle.
- Before picking up (touching) airbag unit mechanic must electrostatically discharge him/herself. This can be achieved touching a suitable metal component, for example, a water pipe, heater system pipe or a metal frame (must be grounded).
- Airbag units must be installed immediately after removal from their transport container.
- If work is interrupted, airbag unit must be placed in its packaging again.
- It is not permitted to leave airbag unit unattended.
- Airbag units which have been removed must be stored so that padded side is facing upward.
- Airbag units which have been dropped onto a hard surface or show signs of damage must not be installed in a vehicle.
- Airbag units which have not ignited (triggered) should be marked as such and returned to manufacturer for disposal (use airbag unit transportation container).
- Storage and transport must comply with legislation for explosive substances.
- Genuine seat covers only can be installed as these have been authorized for use with side airbags (recognized by embroidered "Airbag" symbol).
- Use of commercially available seat covers is not permitted. Only seat covers suitable for use with side airbags may be used.
- When installing backrest cover make sure that cover seam is straight in vicinity of side airbag.
- Replace all cover clips.
- Only use genuine cover clips.
- For safety reasons always replace cover if damaged in vicinity of side airbag - torn, burn holes etc.
