ATF Level, Checking
ATF level, checking, 09G, 6 Spd. A/T
Requirements
- Transmission must not be in emergency running mode.
- Vehicle level.
- Selector lever in position "P", engine running at idling speed.
- Air conditioning system and heater switched off.
- Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 connected, vehicle self-diagnosis and vehicle system "02 - Gearbox electronics" selected.
- The ATF temperature must not be more than approximately 30°C at start of the test. Allow the transmission to cool-down first if necessary.
Note:
- Read ATF temperature with Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information system VAS 5051.
- The ATF level changes as the ATF temperature changes.
- Checking the ATF level when the ATF temperature is too low leads to overfilling.
- Checking the ATF level when the ATF temperature is too high leads to underfilling.
- An overfilled or underfilled transmission will effect the functioning.
- Only ATF available through the parts system may be used in the automatic transmission 09G. Other fluids lead to transmission malfunctioning or failure. ATF part numbers.
Reading ATF temperature
- Indicated on Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051:
- Enter diagnosis function "08 - Read measured value data block" in selection - 1 -.
- Indicated on Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051:
1 - Enter display group (max. value = 255)
- Enter "6" using key pad - 2 - for "Display group number 6" and confirm entry with Q key.
- Indicated on Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051:
- Read ATF temperature in display zone - 1 -.
Checking ATF level
Note:
- The ATF level is checked at the ATF control plug.
- The ATF level is correct when ATF leaks slowly out of the opening at an ATF temperature between 35°C and 45°C (50°C for hot climates) due to the expansion of the fluid when heated.
Note: Ensure that the ATF filler tool V.A.G1924 is clean and do not mix the ATF with other ATF oils.
- Secure reservoir of ATF filler tool V.A.G1924 to vehicle.
- Drive vehicle onto a four-post lifting platform so that vehicle is absolutely level.
- Remove sound insulation - arrows -.
- Position drip tray V.A.G1306 underneath.
- Start engine and run at idling speed.
CAUTION: Wear eye protection.
- Remove ATF control plug - arrow 1 - when ATF temperature reaches 35°C.
- Always replace the seal - arrow - for the ATF control plug.
- ATF present in the overflow pipe - arrow2 - will drain out first.
- If ATF continues to leak out of the ATF control pipe opening before the ATF temperature has reached 40°C, the ATF level is OK.
- Tighten ATF control plug - arrow 1 - (with a new seal) to 27 Nm. ATF check is now completed.
Note: Reinstall the ATF control plug at the latest before the temperature reaches 45°C (50°C for hot climates).
If no ATF leaks out before ATF temperature reaches 45°C, top up. Go to ATF level, topping up. ATF Level, Topping Up
