Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03)
When airbags are ignited the central locking is switched to "unlock", the interior lights are switched "on" and the engine (gasoline engines only) is switched off. In the convertible additionally the Automatic Rollover Supports(TM) is raised.
The function "Crash output" is checked with the standard Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
With the extended Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) the raising of the Automatic Rollover Supports(TM) (convertible) are also checked.
NOTE:
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) must be carried out when the vehicle is stationary.
- The extended Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (convertible) must only be carried out for special reasons (e.g. as servicing point during an inspection).
- During the extended Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) the convertible top must be open.
- If the extended Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) must be repeated (for example when the time limit of 60 seconds is exceeded) the ignition must be switched off and on again before.
- After completing the Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) the central locking controls are not active until the ignition has been switched off and on again.
Extended Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) for vehicles with an Airbag Control Module -J234- version lower than VW7.

- Switch interior light switch to "door contact" and start engine (gasoline engines only).
- Switch central locking to "locked" (operate interior switch via the opened driver's door window).

Extended Standard-Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) for vehicles with Airbag Control Module -J234- version VW7 with Automatic Rollover Supports(TM) (convertible)
WARNING:
- The Automatic Rollover Supports(TM) can cause injuries to persons who are in the trigger area.
- Therefore nobody must be in the vehicle and in the Automatic Rollover Supports(TM) trigger area when the extended Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is carried out (keep away at least 1 m (1 yard)).
NOTE:
- At first the Airbag Control Module -J234- limits the Automatic Rollover Supports(TM) trigger number to 20 (actual counter reading, Read measured value block, display group 12). After this a malfunction entry is made in the control module and the airbag warning lamp lights up. Display Group 012
- Via a special access code (ask Service Department for code and procedure) it is possible to set the counter back to zero.
- When doing this the workshop code of the tester being used for the backspace is saved in the system, Read measured value block, display group 12. Display Group 012
- After the ignition has been switched on or the engine has been started the Automatic Rollover Supports(TM) trigger must be activated within 60 seconds during the On Board Diagnosis (OBD). If the time limit is exceeded the vehicle system blocks the function "Trigger roll-over bar".

If the fault number "01763" is displayed the roll-over bar trigger number limit of 20 has been exceeded and the warning lamp lights up.
- In this case set the counter back to zero via a special access code (for the code and further procedure ask the Service Department).
WARNING: For reasons of safety, the counter must always be set back if the trigger number of 20 is exceeded.
- Erase DTC memory and check again.
If there is no malfunction displayed anymore the backspace was successful.
Checking DTC memory of all control modules
During test and assembly work malfunctions can be recognized from other control modules like e.g. plug disconnected. Therefore on completion the fault memories of all control modules must be checked and erased. To do this:
- Press button 0 twice for address word "Automatic test sequence" and confirm entry with -Q- button. The V.A.G 1551 transmits all known address words one after the other.
When a control module answers with its identification the number of stored malfunctions appears on the display or "No fault detected".
Any system malfunctions that are stored will be displayed one after the other and printed out. The V.A.G 1551 will then transmit the next address word.

2. Erase DTC memory (function 05)
