ATF Level, Checking
ATF level, checking, 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (FWD)
Conditions for performing check
^ All electrical consumers and air conditioner must be switched off.
^ Transmission is not in emergency running mode, ATF temperature is not above approximately 30°C
^ Vehicle level
^ Selector lever at "P", leave engine running at idle
ATF level is affected by ATF temperature.
Checking ATF level at too low ATF temperature leads to overfilling.
Checking ATF level at too high ATF temperature leads to under filling.
Over and under filling lead to impaired functioning of transmission.
- Always replace oil drain plug and seal -1-.
- Always replace O-ring -arrow- on ATF inspection plug -2-.
- ATF fill level -3- is affected by ATF temperature.
- Deflector cap -4- with apertures for ATF charging device VAG 1924. If the charging device is inserted in one of the apertures, the deflector cap must not be pushed upward in the oil pan.
VW ATF is obtainable as a spare part.

- Secure reservoir of ATF filling system VAG 1924 to vehicle.
- Remove noise insulation tray -arrows-.
Connecting vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051
All functions which could previously be performed with V.A.G 1551 can also be performed with the new tester VAS 5051 in the operating mode "Vehicle self-diagnosis".
Vehicles to 09.00
- Remove the cover above the diagnostic connection on right next to the parking brake lever.
- With ignition switched off, connect tester VAS 5051 to diagnosis connection using diagnosis cable VAS 5051/1 or VAS 5051/3.
Vehicles from 10.00
- With ignition switched off, connect tester VAS 5051 to diagnostic connection using diagnosis cable 5051/1 or 5051/3.
Continued for all vehicles
- Switch on tester -arrow-.
Now the tester requires approximately 3 minutes to run up.
Reading ATF temperature - Switch on ignition.
- Select mode of operation: press button on touch screen for "Vehicle self-diagnosis".
- Select vehicle system: select "02 - transmission electronics" on touch screen.
- Interact with the system to confirm the control module number of the system selected.
- Select diagnostic function: at this point, all diagnostic functions are available.
- Select "08" read measured value blocks" on the touch screen.
- Select display group 4 via "Measured value block" and "Change display group number".
The upper display zone shows the ATF temperature.
The ATF temperature should not be more than approximately 30°C at the start of the test.
- Start engine.
- Raise vehicle.
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 underneath.
- Bring ATF to test temperature.
Test temperature: 35°C to 45°C
- Remove ATF inspection plug from oil pan (arrow).
ATF drips out of hole:
ATF level -arrow- is OK
Only a small amount of ATF should come out of the inspection hole when the engine is running.
- Install new O-ring on ATF inspection plug and tighten to 80 Nm. The ATF check is now completed.
- Switch off engine.
If no ATF comes out of the inspection hole.
