Oil Filter: Service and Repair

12-cylinder gasoline engine

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) V.A.G 1331

Removing



- Unscrew oil drain plug -1- of screw cap and drain oil.
- Loosen screw cap -3- on hex head -2- or on circumference and remove.
- Clean sealing surfaces at cap and at oil filter housing.

Installing



- Install oil filter -5-
- Install cap -3- with new O-ring -4- and tighten to 25 Nm.
- Install new sealing ring -2- for oil drain plug -1- and tighten to 10 Nm.

8-cyl Gasoline engine

Special tools, teaters and auxiliary items required
- Spring type clip pliers VAS 5024/
- Ratchet VAS 5300/68
- Extension VAS 5300/70
- Universal joint VAS 5300/71
- Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) V.A.G 1331

Removing
- Remove engine covers

NOTE! Because of the tight installation conditions, the complete air filter housing must be removed, before the oil filter can be changed.




- Remove screws -1- of air circulation housing -2-
- Disconnect the connector -1-.
- Loosen clip -2- using spring type clip pliers VAS 5024/ and remove the inlet hose.



- Remove screws (4x) at top of air cleaner -arrow-.
- Remove top of air cleaner upward.



- Disconnect connectors off from the ignition coils with power outset stages -2-.
- Remove screws -1- and place plug wires downward.



- Observe installation position!



- Remove air filter element -A-



- Remove screw -1- from lower part of air cleaner housing.



- Remove lower part of air cleaner from lower mounting plate -2-
- Remove lower part of air cleaner out -1-. towards ignition coils with power-output stages.



- Oil filter module becomes visible between engine block and side rail -arrow-
- Loosen and tighten oil filter module cap -1-, at hex nut -arrow-, using e.g. reversible ratchet VAS 5300/68, extension VAS 5300/70 and universal joint VAS 5300/71 as well as 24 mm socket for wrenches.

Installing



- Install oil filter -1-.
- Clean sealing surfaces at cap and at oil filter housing.
- Install cap -3- with new O-ring -2- and tighten to 25 Nm.
- Installation is reverse of removal.
