Front Seat, Lumbar Support Squeaking

Supersedes T.B. Group 72 number 05-01 dated Jan. 28, 2005 due to addition of rear seat lumbar lubrication procedure.

Condition

Squeaking noise is heard when operating front or rear seat lumbar support.

May be caused by insufficient lubrication on seat lumbar tracks.

Service

Identify which seat needs lubrication by operating all lumbar supports to full travel in each direction.

Front seat, lubricating lumbar support

- Remove front seat backrest cover. See Repair Manual, Group 72, Body Interior, Seat backrest cover, removing and installing.

Lubricate lumbar support tracks as follows:





- Apply special grease (Part No. G 000 450 02) along length of support track - arrows- (see Illust. 72-A045 for view of lumbar support).

Note:
One tube of special grease (Part No. G 000 450 02) will do many vehicles, therefore, it is considered shop supply

Tip:
Lumbar adjustment assembly shown removed for clarity only Procedure is completed with assembly installed in seat back.





- Apply special grease (Part No. G 000 450 02) along full length of support track - arrows- -

- Operate front seat lumbar to ensure noise has been eliminated.

In addition to applying lubricant to lumbar support tracks:





- Apply light coat of special grease (Part No. G 000 450 02) along cable -arrow- (where cable contacts lumbar support).

In addition to applying lubricant to lumbar support tracks:





- Apply light coat of special grease (Part No. G 000 450 02) along headrest adjustment screw -arrow-.





Tip:
It will be necessary to install two new clips Part No.: 3D0 881 279 -arrows- for upper seat back cover as these are usually destroyed when removing cover.

Rear seat, lubricating lumbar support

- Remove rear seat backrest and tip forward (do not remove from vehicle) See Repair Manual, Body Interior Group 72 - Seats - Frames "Rear seat cushion, 5-seater, removing and installing".

Lubricate lumbar support tracks as follows:





- Apply special grease (Part No: GG 000 450 02) along length of support track - arrows- (see Illust. 72-A050 below for clarity).

Tip:
Lubricate both left and right lumbar assemblies while the rear seat back rest is removed.

- Install rear seat backrest. See Repair Manual, Body Interior Group 72 - Seats - Frames "Rear seat cushion, 5-seater, removing and installing".

- Operate each seat lumbar support to full travel in each direction to ensure noise has been eliminated.
